My first impression about Norwich was the idea of travelling through the time. Gothic churches and castles popped everywhere, and the spirits of ancient Normands and medieval or XVIth century Britons invited me to discover the village. Narrow streets and wooden houses, today, are still a magnificent scene to imagine storytellings about spirits, rioters as Ketts or pubs plenty of life.

Activity

As activity I propose you to compare these two maps of Norwich and describe them, answering these questions:

- Could you see any similarity between them? And differences? Explain it with detail

- What city do you believe is the best for living? Give reasons to support your idea

- Elaborate a short research about living in a medieval city: hygiene, facilities, security measures, type of houses

Political situation in England through the Middle Ages is specially marked by the Norman invasion in 1076, leaded by William the Conqueror. After the battle of Hastings, this king started a new way of ruling the country, based on the feudal system that brought from France.
Since that moment, Norwich, starting in its castle as a royal and noble center, became a very important city in England because of its particular situation, close to the sea and plenty of plain fields where food could be produced.

Activity

The war between England and France has been declared, and the kingdom needs your help!
In pairs, you will have both a different letter to write:
- One of you will be the noble and will have to write a formal letter to the king offering his services
-One of you will be the king asking help to the noble and offering some profits in exchange

The English society was a feudal society where every member is connected to their hierarchical superiors by personal relationships. How does feudalism work? The king was at the top of the pyramid and the whole society beyond him ws closely related between lords and vassals and through personal relationships. In many occasions that kind of society created problems related to crime and its consequent punishment.

Activity

In pairs, investigate about the parts of a commendation ceremony and elaborate a short theatre piece

Between VI and XI century, approximately, education was a religious issue, not a laic one.
Nevertheless, since XII century universities started to run and gave laics (specially noble and bourgeois people) the chance of studying and improving their knowledges about laws, Medicine and how to administrate the new statal institutions that were appearing in that moment.
Cambridge or Oxford are the best example of how a university can create a new landscape of cultural development in England.
In Norwich the most important school in Middle Ages was Saint Andrew.

Activity

Observe this graphic and and answer the questions:

-Describe the graphic as much as you can
- Why do you believe the amount of manuscripts is so low until 1100-1200?
