He was reelected to a second term in 1996 with almost three-fifths of the vote.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Mills died in office on July 24, 2012, near the end of his term. Vice Pres. <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="md-crosslink" href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/John-Mahama">John Dramani Mahama</a> was sworn in as <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/interim">interim</a> president later that day. He later was selected to be the NDC’s presidential candidate in the December 7, 2012, election. Mahama faced seven other candidates, including Akufo-Addo, who again represented the NPP.
