What is a portrait and a self-portrait?

A portrait is of someone else, and a self portrait is of the artist by the artist.

What purpose does a portrait serve? 

The purpose is to reflect what the artists wants to portray, feelings, stances,inference through an image.

Where would you see a portrait? 

Gallery, Instagram, school, pamphlet ect.

How could a portrait give detail about a person’s life?

The portrait can portray what emotions they are feeling, how they live, and what they like. 

Explain some techniques an artist might use in a portrait to connect the subject with the audience?

I specifically chose each object to represent different parts of my life. For example, the maps on the note book represents my love for travel, and the the old pages represent the old books that I like to collect and read. I wanted the colours to be warm and comforting, so in post I changed the contrast and levels of shadows and brightness to create that feel. I wanted to portray a kind of dreamlike look with everything strewn around me. The same principles apply for the other photos. Except with the portrait of my cat, he looks very stern, almost stoic. His eyes stand out and make him look very intense.
