This painting shows the aftermath of Icarus' fall. This sense of the aftermath is what I shall focus on with my piece, with my protagonist being punished, not with his own death, but the death of his friends and family, so this sense of reflection can be done by Edward. Not losing his life is his punishment, having to live and reflect on his actions.

Story Arc

The story of Icarus follows a character who starts at a low point, rising to have a better life, to have freedom. This rise is then brought crashing down directly caused by his failings.

Medieval Farmers

Edward will come from humble beginnings as the son of a farmer. He will rise up and leave his rough beginning and become a brave soldier, before catching the eye of King Arthur himself in battle, saving his life. This will lead him to become a knight of the round table. With his success though he will forget his routes and subsequently be at fault, due to his arrogance, of the downfall of his home and family.

Knights of the Round Table

My story will involve the Knights of the Round Table, with my character Edward telling the story of how he achieved his dream of being at the table, having ruined his, and the life of his family to get there.

Setting:

My narrative will take place in England during the 6th century, with real medieval influence, alongside mythological and fantasy elements in the setting. This may include dragons, magical characters such as Merlin and Camelot with King Arthur and the knights of the round table.

Goodfellas

My narrative will follow a similar structure to Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese, 1990.

My story will also be told from the perspective of the Protagonist, with Edward retelling his story the same way as Ray Liotta's character Henry, with Henry speaking from the present, recounting his past, showing how he got to where he is today. Goodfellas as a narrative structure also fits the Icarus narrative arc of starting from low to rise and the fall, directly from the actions of the protagonist.

Death

A possible direction would be to use death, possibly personified as a character that guides my protagonist to do evil, or to go down the wrong path, becoming corrupt and leading to my characters downfall.

Death will play a key part of my narrative, with key figures in Edwards life leading to his downfall. These deaths will be caused by his mistakes.

Dudley and Empson

In the 15th century, Sir Richard Empson and Sir Edmund Dudley worked for King Henry VII. They were in charged and blamed for the control of taxation of the greater public. They were hugely disliked by most and when Henry VIII became king he had them both killed as a way to gain favour with his subjects.

This may be a possible route of my narrative, to have my protagonist climb the ladder in politics, working for the king, becoming disliked or leading to the downfall of those close to him, fuelled by the need to get higher up in the kingdom.

My narrative would have Edward work his way up becoming a knight of the round table, with his drive to become King Arthur's right-hand man. On this journey he forgets his humble upbringing and end up ruining his family and friends of his past by taking too much from them, leading his family back home to starve.

ST George and the Dragon

Possible ending:

I may use a Dragon (possibly a metaphor) to bring the downfall in the narrative. My character would be brash and reckless, being fully capable of destroying the dragon, however in his boasting display be killed by the dragon, or have the dragon destroy his home.

This would parallel the ending structure of Icarus, with my character, Edward, becoming too arrogant and believe himself to be invincible, similar to Icarus not listening to warning to not fly too close to the sun, before being punished for his actions.

Pulp Fiction - Structure

My narrative could possibly be similar to pulp fiction, using non-linear aspects.

The film opens with "Pumpkin", played by Tim Roth, and "Honey Bunny", played by Amanda Plummer. The two characters are in a diner, with the two characters talking before revealing they are there to commit a robbery. As the robbery begins the title card plays and you don't see the outcome until later in the film, with the final scene seeing the same events happen from the perspective of Samuel L. Jackson's character "Jules". This time you see the outcome of this beginning scene.

For my narrative I shall do the same, starting the story at the end, having the story being recounted from the perspective of Edward.
