After creating a newsletter I realized the importance of consistent communication with the parents. Keeping them in the loop with whats going on in each subject area helps them to be proactive in their child's learning. Also, having this information readily available prevents a bombardment of questions from the parents. Not only do we send the newsletter home but we also upload them on our class communication app so the parents can access it anytime. I have learned that sending a newsletter about the upcoming week provides opportunities for the parents to get involved in lessons and plan their week and their child's week accordingly.

During our lesson, we find that often times the children need help quieting down and focusing their attention. Therefore, we created transitions in our classroom that help the children to understand their expectations or to get their attention. When we are trying to get the children's attention we say, "class, class" and the children respond with "yes, yes". After the children respond, they will zip their lips shut and then point to the teacher to make sure their focus is where it needs to be. To mix it up and keep the transition effective, we change up the tune and the children must mock the tune in their response.
Anytime the class needs to line up for arts block, lunch, recess, end of the day, etc. we will play the Line Up song from "Bubble Guppies". Once the children hear this tune, they know to immediately line up by walking and silently getting in line.
Similarly, for the last transition, when we want the children to come to the carpet for review or whole group we will play the come to the carpet song. Because they are so familiar with it now, they will sing along and by the time the song ends they will be sitting with quiet mouths.

For Literacy Centers, I created this pocket chart activity that would help children with their fluency. The "a" and "of" cards are "tricky words" that the students have been reviewing during phonics. And the other words contain sounds and digraphs that we have also been learning. This helps them practice seeing a word and knowing it and also pulling out the sounds if they need to. The children have enjoyed the freedom of creating their own sentence and reading it to a partner. This activity has been a success in the classroom.

One of the biggest parts of my classroom management plan is creating an environment where the children feel like they are part of a team. I feel that gaining this respect helps the children to give respect more freely in return and decreases behavior problems. One way I like to "be a part of the team" or gain their respect is to show the students that I care about them and the things going on in their life. Therefore, before every lesson I begin with a conversation. If its in the morning, our conversations last longer and the children share more, however, after recess or ancillary the children explain what they did and how they are feeling. I believe this small step helps the children to know they are cared about and that the classroom is a safe place for them to share.

I am currently on the Board of Directors for a children's charity called 4thekids. 4thekids Baton Rouge, Inc. is a teen-founded charity organized in 2012 to expand and improve the children’s hospital facilities in Baton Rouge, and to encourage and promote teen involvement in our endeavor for the construction of a freestanding children’s hospital in our capital city of Louisiana.
