what is your favorite movie and why?

Blade runner (1989)

The world is the main selling point of this movie for me. The world feels real, it actually feels so authentic. you can clearly see how almost every sci-fi movie released after it take such a heavy influence from the movie.

The soundtrack gives the movie even more immersion, it just flushes my skin with emotion.

The final monologue "Tears in Rain" encapsulates the core essence of the movie and shows us what it really feels to live in such a grim-dark-neonesque cyberpunk world.

Reviewing the shortfilms 1)Tommy, Shona Noble, Jamie Cameron, Po Wen Xsiao, Yu Hui Huang, Nastia Nikolskaya and 2) The Black Hole, Philip Sansom and Olly Williams

1) Right when the movie starts you can the movie gives off a very dark and unsettled vibe. This is because of a great use of the sound design and also taking advantage of the weather gives the movie a more believable tone as well. the colour grading further adds a layer to the film. One of the shots that was my favorite in the movie was when the camera was focused on the rear view mirror and the movement was being shown through the mirror.

2) The film felt like it was trying to portray a certain sense of paranoia and objectively did manage to do it for the majority of the time. The soundtrack is quite haunting and gives it a very omniscient vibe. The vfx were mostly on point and the actor's performances were great as well. The shots were clean and crisp and the viewer could perfectly understand how the pacing of the movie was going.

thought process for premise and script

when i initially started out planning i wanted the story to reflect the kind of person i am, because the kind of films that I am watching after coming to glasgow have been something very different, somehow after changing cities it feels like there has been a slight change in my personality.

I always used to watch more serious movies ranging from thrillers to a lot of sci-fi. After coming here I started watching more of laid back and slice of life movies.

I wanted to somehow encapsulate this change that I went through the short film.

I started taking references from my day to day life because I felt that in order to get the most organic and real story out, it has to come out of my personal experience and when i started thinking of such instances the only thing i could think of was my commute to GSA. I live in shawlands which is in the southern part of the city and i have to take bus and i noticed that whenever i was narrating any funny story it was during my travel in the bus.

I believe to be a storyteller and I wanted the same out of my film and this one interaction that i had with an older man in a bus stop really got a strong hold on me.

i began to ponder on the interactions i witnessed while i commuted to GSA and i remembered that i had a very wholesome interaction with an elderly person while i was waiting by the bus stop. The man was from pakistan and had migrated to the UK around the time of partition.

So, i took this story as a base to write my own version of the narrative, seeing where this would lead me while writing the script of this movie.

later i realized that it would be really tough to get an elderly indian person and make him act in a certain way. So i scrapped the idea and began to work on another one

the next topic that came to my mind was the kind of movies that i was watching currently. The next script that i wrote was taken a heavy reference from the movie before sunrise. I really liked the film, it shows what kind of an effect spontaneity brings to the table. Both the leads had great chemistry and it actually felt like the conversations were happening naturally.

I tried to depict these elements in my next script.

I went into this elective with a mindset of learning something new and unique. I have always been a movie buff and wanted to know the process that leads to finally making a finished film, the important aspects of what make a film great and lastly what challenges someone faces while making a film. I believe that this is only possible to learn when you experience these trials yourself.

My role for this film has been of an art director, assistant director and the actor. I was responsible for the major concepts of the film.

Our film revolves around showing the different personalities of two different individuals and how they interact with each other. It was my idea to show the film from a top-down view and place the individuals in a certain shape of a frame. Reason for this was that I feel that framing is one of the most underrated concepts of film making that often gets overlooked. Any film instantly looks different when you change the frame of it and looks artistically very unique.

I got this idea from the music video “we don’t talk anymore by Charlie puth ft Selina Gomez” which I also showed it to our tutor in one of our group sessions. In this music video they show how break up affects the two main characters and how they are dealing this change in their lives. I felt that doing something similar would look very gloomy so I insisted that we do something a little bit more cheerful and fortunately the scriptwriter managed to bring that to life.

Overall, the group dynamics were satisfactory and I feel everyone in my group were kind and respectful of one and another, even though we struggled quite a bit when it came to communication because of the language barrier I feel everyone has given their best and managed to make a film that satisfied all of us. Another significant struggle we faced while doing this film was being inclusive of everyone’s ideas, because everyone had an idea of how the film was supposed to be directed but eventually, we did manage to strike a middle ground that satisfied all of us.

My overall learning experience has been quite positive as I was able to have so many industry insights from our tutors but also at the same time, I have learnt the art of cinematography from one of my peers who shot the film. I always had a bunch of ideas in my head but always struggled to put them in a visual format and also struggled with the shooting aspect and after taking this elective my knowledge about film in general has increased.

having written the older script it felt like the whole story when it concluded, it felt like it was a too good to be true story and the comments that i received during the formative also highlighted this so i decided to change and improve on a certain things, out of which the ending was the one i changed which i believe was a much more realistic end to a story.
