but sometimes his adventurous nature bested him. due to an injury he received on his right leg from falling off a tree, his mother (the first lady) advised him from not training for military service. with his childhood friends being part of the military, he felt left out as he was headed more in the political path. while he gained a genuine interest in being part of the ministry of works in the future, he also loved to branch out on other things.

after he passed the gwageo at 17, he went out to a tavern in the more commoner dwellings. the thatched roof overhead did not deter in his entertainment, however, as on one drunken night with his friends, he sang his heart out, while one of the musicians was playing the gayageum.

utilizing his talent and skill in writing, he wrote love letters for fun until he was reprimanded by one of his attendants for clogging up the post system for the couriers, to his chagrin.

life trudged on its usual tedium for joseon. until one night, on the 5th of august, when loud cries resonated in the estate. they were from none other than byun sangwook, the infant who is now the apparent heir to the byun clan. usually a cold and calculating man, his father looked at him as if he was a golden apple that fell from a tree. eyes brimming with hope, hope for the future, and his clan overtaking yangju. that was until maidservants and attendants noticed young sangwook making a mess out of everything, vases falling to the floor and soil covering the wooden floors as he ran around in his baby clothes. he was a very active kid, moving before he learned how to talk fully.

however, both his father and mother were both very loving to him, in contrast to how his father was with his younger siblings.

he attended the sungkyunkwan at age 10, but of course, he did not have to worry about the gwageo until his teenage years. despite his rowdier nature, he did have an interest in reading, but he still remained keen on his senses which helped cultivate interests in architecture. while he often went around yangju and even up the capital of hanseong, he embarked on adventures to study the world around him in silent awe.

as an adult, there was an austerity that in him that was not seen before. affected by the disappearance of his beloved sister haeryeong, he was shocked to find one day, back in the estate with a small child swaddled in a blue cloth.

byun jihae, the name of his nephew.

it was originally found by their housekeeper. but it felt more right to him to have the baby kept with haeryung, and with him being the supportive caretaker.

while still in shock, he promised to be a caregiver to him even as he was preparing for his position as the newly appointed secretary in the ministry of works, working alongside his father. sangwook dearly loved his father and what he had done for him. but he also made it a point he did not agree with everything he did. the first time, he made that clear when his father chastised haeryung for being with child. the fight resulted in sangwook shielding her from him, and a scar on his cheek was the aftermath of that argument.

in hanseong, he would usually walk with a cane, as he did not leave unscathed from that nasty injury he had while he was younger.

and out of work, he would still sing drunkenly (although remaining on pitch) in the taverns as a way to relieve stress.

sangwook who had a one sided crush on haewon, spent many days in yoon household as a ‘friend’. for five years, haewon (who hasn’t taken his feelings seriously) never knew of his affections for her whilst spending many summers with him. their favourite past time was weaving norigaes, yet, after all these years, it was a common knowledge that sangwook never had a flair for arts (aka the painting and crafts kind)*. and till this day, haewon has a collection of the ugly norigaes sangwook has made and gave to her.

*which is why he has been told to stick to singing drunkenly in a bar (with perfect pitch somehow).

although sangwook held a prominent position in the ministry of works, word has been made of his disappearance for two weeks. not only had he not shown up in the debut ball after three years, he also did not show up to work. there had been missing posters posted around hanseong. due to his father receiving the news, unfortunately, sangwook had to go back to the byun estate and leave haewon shortly after impulsively marrying at a makeshift altar, after receiving an angry letter from his father for the first time.

as punishment, he was not allowed to leave the house and the office holding the ministry of works. last but not least, his marriage to haewon was considered to be a sham due to his family not approving of his choice in bride (her being a sangmin commoner and not of an upper class family), per duke byun’s request. resulting in the queen to not recognizing the marriage due to the loopholes they took and not following standard marriage procedure.

the ryus and the byuns have been family friends for a period of time, and sangwook and yeonhwa became close as childhood friends. rumors about sangwook’s puppy crush on yeonhwa spread throughout the ton, to his chagrin as he grew older and was constantly reminded of it, especially in yeonhwa’s presence. but as the rumors grew out of control, so did the families’ desire to have the two of them betrothed to one another.

as a result, the eldest son of the byun clan, byun sangwook and one of the wondrous beauties of joseon, ryu yeonhwa, were set to be engaged at the ages of 20 and 18, and to hold a formal ceremony at hanseong in the summer of 1861.

duchess ryu, however, wanted to hold off the ceremony until yeonhwa reaches the proper debut age. and when she did turn 21, melancholic feelings of mourning swept through joseon due to the death of the king.

thus, their wedding was postponed until the mourning period ended. however, upon sangwook’s return and the revelation of what he did on his trip, duke ryu was furious at what he perceived as disrespect toward his daughter and family. in his anger, he decided to call off the betrothal, thus leading into the participation of sangwook and yeonhwa into the blind dates.

however, recently, there are rumors that the marquess of yangju and marchioness of gwangju are in the process of reconciling. whispers amongst their servants tell a tale of love letters being sent back and forth the two houses, most likely from the two.

even with his engagement to ryu yeonhwa of house of the willow tree, sangwook was not to be seen in the debut ball with his fiancé. instead, he spent a fortnight with yoon haewon, overtaken by the infatuation he held for her for several years and affected by the mutual good feelings they held for one another, thus leading to the current events.

despite the sporadic bouts of nausea, they both had a good time bonding with each other during their trip, though he wondered if it were due to the both of them neither being good cooks. or an illness imminent.

however, ever since he made his return to his ancestral home (the byun estate), he was unable to see her again for the time being due to his ongoing house arrest.

so his only window of opportunity of being out to clear up any misunderstandings with haewon was through the chilhwa nakhwa nori festival.

on the second week (after he went on his blind date), he managed to sneak out and find her in the festival, but with some stranger with his hand on her wrist. overwhelmed with the urge to explain himself to her, he paid no heed to him and whisked her away from him to have a private conversation.

but it did not prevent the other man from trailing behind them. catching a whiff of the scent of vomit, alarm roused within them, causing the both of them to visit the clinic nearby.

when the physician revealed the truth of her pregnancy, he felt shock — what if the child was his? the truth of who the father is though, has not been fully unveiled.
