Wednesday Chapel Mass 21/06/17 Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6. 16-18Jesus said to his disciples: 'Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; that is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men's admiration. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. I tell you solemnly. they have had their reward. But when you pray, go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.'When you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that no one will know that you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.'

This story reminds me of how each year, Brother Rochford goes without to save money from his small allowance, to enable him to donate (anonymously) to the Red Shield Appeal, Edmund Rice Camp initiatives and more. This is a living example of this message.

This is the same Gospel that led us into the season of Lent. It gives us a model of how we could approach our prayer, our fasting, and our giving. We don't do these things to make ourselves look good. We do these things out of love for one another because of the gift of love and life that we have been given in Jesus Christ.

In our community Brother Rochford, is such a great example for his generosity to others in our Shalom community in ways that don't get recognised such as saying “Shalom Chaverim” to every student that walks through the school gates of a morning even if they walk past he will still say “Shalom Chaverim,” He makes a special point of acknowledging every students birthday with a had rotten book mark which I am sure many students will treasure as they look back at their time at Shalom years from now. It is so kind how he does that for students without recognition In the Shalom community

Alexie Edwards

This week's Chapel Mass Gospel makes me ponder on how there is something very special about a child's openness to the wonder and awe of creation. They have a real openness to all things, before they become 'learned' and turn their attention away from the simple pleasures that reveal so much about our God. It is no wonder that he encouraged Jesus to start with the children. The picture below is from Rick Stevens' 'God's Quiet Things' which I think captures this very thought.

The Gospel from this morning's Chapel Mass (Matthew 13) reminds me of the words spoken by a guest speaker at a conference I attended in Brisbane this week. He was an academic who had spiralled through to great success, from his humble beginnings as a refugee. He spoke from his research based knowledge of sociology and described there being a hole in our hearts the shape of God. He explained how it is in our human nature to try and fill this hole with materialistic items. He suggested that the economy had been built on the fact that we yearn to fill this hole with bought items, without ever being fully satisfied and ultimately a slave to the economic world, living from purchase to purchase. This gentleman had come to believe that the only thing that fills that hole is God. After listening to this Gospel and with this man’s message fresh in my mind, I make links to the satisfaction that is felt in helping another, feeling loved and experiencing another’s kindness in our own lives. It is easy to forget how much more fulfilling these simple things in life are and how much more rewarding this can be to an expensive, once desired purchase. Unfortunately, the world we live in drenches us with all things shiny, often blinding us from this simple, inexpensive idea.
