How the working class impacted society and how long they worked - The working class was underpaid and overworked. Because they were underpaid, roughly 20% of the population in the cities were at or under the poverty level. Most workers put in 10-12 hours, 6-7 days per week.
Who - Women and children were the main workers during the 1800’s and 1900’s.
Why - The industrial revolution led to more factories opening up which meant that more workers were needed in the cities instead of on farms. About 60% of people lived in the cities now.
What they did and what they earned - The working class mainly were employed in factories. Women and children could be found working at clothing or textile factories while boys could be found working at steel mills. Women could also hold the position of bookkeepers, secretaries, and as salesclerks. Women and children could be payed less then men so they only earned approximately 20¢ per hour. They earned about $600 per yer which is hardly enough to live on.
When - The industrial revolution started to take place in 1790 but really began to boom in the 1800’s.
Where - The inventions that led to the industrial revolution were being developed in the south. These inventions were mainly to help pick up the slack on farms because slavery was not allowed anymore.

How the new consumer culture impacted society - The new consumer culture made the American economy boom. Prices went down because it was cheap now to make products because of new inventions. Because prices were cheaper, not as many people were below the poverty level.
Who - Because products were being produced easily, the cost went down. Therefore, the poor people, as well as the rich, could now afford to buy well-made items from a store.
Why - The new consumer culture began because goods were being produced more rapidly. New inventions that had been made from the industrial revolution aided this movement.
What - The new consumer culture created more jobs for people. Working in a store was not as intensive as working in a factory. It made some peoples’ lives better.
When - Department stores were opening up around the 1870’s. By the 1900’s, stores were distributing thousands of catalogs to gain the attention of their consumers.
Where - Products were being shipped and sold all over the nation. People could buy products from department stores and chain stores now.

However, there where some high-payed workers who joined because they wanted a shorter work day.
Why - The workers were tired of having to work long hours in horrible conditions. They were also not paid fairly.
What - This group organized strikes throughout the country to show their bosses that they would not tolerate being treated unfairly.

How this way of management impacted society - This scientific management, also know as stop-watch management, increased the ability to produce items more quickly in a factory setting. This also increased people’s skill level in the department they were working in.
Who - Farmers, women and children did not like this process. However, they soon adapted and were able to make products faster than ever.
Why - The workers did not like this style of work but it was efficient and profitable for the business owners.
What - When using this process, people would perform the same job over and over which is similar to an assembly line. This management suggested that people be trained in an area of work rather than have to learn it themselves. This proved to be very helpful.
When - In 1911, Frederick Winslow Taylor published a book called, The Principles of Scientific Management. In this book, he told people about the most effective way to run a business.
Where - Many factories adopted this work method to save time and money.

They supported shorter work hours, better pay and better working conditions. They went on strikes and were granted all that they had asked for.
Who - Workers, low-payed and high-payed, went on peaceful strikes to show their bosses that they wanted to be treated fairly. Unlike the Knights of Labor, the people who participated in this group were skilled workers.
Why - Samuel chose skilled workers because they were a bigger asset to companies and businesses because they could not be replaced easily.
What - The main motto of this group was “keep it simple” because they only wanted small and fair changes in the work setting.
When - In 1886 Samuel Gompers formed the American Federation of Labor.
Where - The working class all over the country participated in the strikes and boycotts.
