Two of Scott's teammate were killed in the accident and unbeknownst to her, she had broken her spine.

She was also forced to lay in a rotating bed for many hours at a time and was only allowed to sit up for 5 minutes a day.

Her spine broke multiple places within the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine. The doctor told her it was a surgery no one would want twice due to the great amount of pain it causes. She ended up having it three times.

While at risk for hypothermia was a problem, the snow prevented the area around her spine from swelling. Had it not been for this, she probably would have remained paralyzed for life.

She was rushed to the hospital and had to undergo 3 more surgeries. The surgeons removed the rods and made their repairs from the front. They had to deflate her lungs, move her stomach, and tie off arteries. They also inserted a four inch piece of bone to support the spinal cord.

After over a year of therapy, she was able to compete in a swim meet for Notre Dame once again, but no where near as fast as she used to be.
