As you are reading your fantasy novel in book clubs, please reflect on these two questions. Make sure to make the title as the date.

1. What are some features of fantasy texts you have identified?

2. Why are these features important to this genre? Use examples from your book.

Setting is an important feature in genre because it paints the visualization in my head. In my book, the setting is a castle. I'm able to visualize this castle due to the details of it being gray, gloomy, and as it states, "hugely immense in the middle of a creepy orchard meadow." If the setting was changed, that would change the entire story and mood.

The setting in my fantasy texts is in a garbage can and street when the babies were born and was growing up.

2) Setting is an important features in the fantasy texts, because it describes more mood of the characters of what they are doing. In my book, the setting is in garbage can and street. I’m able to know how the character’s mood in that setting of what they are doing. “Car wheels and truck wheels rolling past all day-rubbish and litter-hungry dogs-endless shoes and boots walking, running, stamping, kicking-nowhere safe and quiet, and less and less to eat,” stated “Catwings”. This setting made me think that the cat family aren’t living very wealthy and isn’t in a super good mood. So the setting is an important features in fantasy texts.

The setting of that book is underland. The beginning of the story happened in George’s laundry room. He fell down to the underland from the laundry room, and the story continued in Regalia, a city in the underland. In chapter 2 it said, “Behind the curtains of wings, Gregor could hear his voice beckoning. “Gregor the Overlander, welcome to the city of Regalia!” Then the story moved on to Crawlers’ (Roach) territory. Afterwards they went to the Spinners’ (Spider) territory. At the end of the story they were at the Gnawers’ (Rats) territory. At the very end they went back to Regalia after finishing the quest (Prophecy of Grey). At last they went back to the overland. The setting is very important for fantasy stories, because usually fantasy stories happen in a imaginary (made-up) world from the authors mind. The author described the setting very clearly. For example, the author explained that the Gnawers’ (Rats) territory is very smelly, stinky, dirty, dark & chilly.

And it happened when they were living away with their parents.

2) Character is an important features in the fantasy texts, because it describes more details about how the fantasy texts will go on base off of what is character’s power or what does character likes to do etc. “All four of her children had wings,” stated “Catwings” Based off of how characters looks like, what power do they have, and what is their personalities, it gives me many details. So characters are important features in the fantasy texts.

She had to chose between staying with her family, or leaving the city. In the book, Lina worried, ""How could I leave Puppy? And not even say goodbye to her?"
2. Problems are important features in fantasy, because in my book, Lina had to chose between leaving or staying, but she had to leave. The guards were chasing her and Doon, so if she didn’t run away, she would be caught. If the problem changed, she wouldn’t have to leave the city far away from her family.

You also needed to learn about the characters or else will get confused of how is talking.

Setting is an important feature in genre because it tells about the place it is talking about. That makes you visualize better in your head. For example in the book “The City of Ember” in chapter 1 paragraph 1 states “In the city of Ember, the sky was always dark. The only light came from great flood lamps mounted on the buildings and at the tops of poles in the middle of the larger square.

I know this because she has magical abilities and all the other characters "quake with fear at her presence." She can even turn those that don't do her will into stone statues!

A character with power is an important feature in the fantasy genre because that is normally where the problem / conflict comes from. Had it not been for this evil queen, the main characters would not need to go on their quest. This would alter the entire plot and the story would definitely not be as interesting as it is now.

And that one short quote made me think what will happen next or how is the problem going to solve.

1) An important feature of fantasy texts that I found was character having power. In my fantasy texts, the power that the characters have is that they could fly. And they had the power since when they were born.

2) Character having power is an important features in fantasy texts, because character having power could normally change the whole story depending on what’s their power. And the Catwings didn’t had wings, first, the whole book wouldn’t be named “Catwings”. Second, they won’t be able to solve the problem which is that they should leave the trashcan if they didn’t had their wings. Third, obviously they won’t be able to solve their problems. And also, the other Catwings book’s story could change depending on characters power. For example, in the book “Catwings” and “Catwings Return” The Catwings won’t be able to leave the trashcan and live happily with Susan and Hank. “........They spread their wings and flew up, over the alley, over the roofs, away,” stated “Catwings”. So they were able to leave the trash can because of their power having wings. And also, in the second book, James and Harriet won’t be able to fly back to meet their mom and find Jane. “Harriet And James we’re flying along through a fine, soft rain,” stated “Catwings Return”. Harriet And James won’t be able to fly back to meet their mom if they didn’t had their power which was being able to fly. And in the third book, if Jane didn’t had wings, she won’t be able to find Alexander and rescue him. “.......He saw a bird flying straight towards him, coming nearer and near.........One branch at a time, step by step and paw by paw, she led home down and down the tree, always showing him the way and waiting for him. If Jane didn’t had wings, she won’t be able to find Alexander and help him get down the tall tree. This feature could change the whole story if the powers that characters have had changed.

1.One of the important features in fantasy texts are characters. I just finished my 2 stories, “The Castle in the Attic” and “The Battle for The Castle.” Both story has similar characters, except it’s just slightly different. My story’s main character was a boy named William, he’s short, but truely a gymnast.

2. Characters are important. I mean, duh.... Buts more specifically, WHY? Oh, it’s because they are the main things in a story. They are the one who actually does the hole thing! For example in my story, the main character goes on an adventure 2 times. Once by himself from the Castle in the Attic, and another time with his best friend, Jason, in the Battle for the Castle. It all started from the Castle that Mrs. Phillips gave William in Chapter 1 of the Castke in the attic. So, if characters aren’t there, the story wouldn’t flow! So that’s why characters are an important feature of fantasy.

April 2
In the book The Castle in the Attic the characters, settings, and problems were very interesting because for characters there is the evil wizard, Alastor and a knight called Sir Simon who is trying to kill Alastor with William, in page 32 to 38 when the knight was telling why he needs to kill Alastor. For settings the story starts in Williams house Attic and then in the middle of the book it is in another world there is a gigantic castle in page 107 to 108 where it said that William and Sir Simon was going in to the other world. For the problems it was actually interesting because like I said in page 32 to 38 Sir Simon said the story about the proble that Alastor was making the people in the magical world all cursed or still. In the book The Battle for the Castle the characters are William, Gudrin, Jason, Brian, Dick, Deegan, Sir Simon and the evil rats. The settings are still in Williams house attic and the other world with the castle. The problem is that the rats are coming to the Castle to destroy the people and eat them.

From the City of Ember underground to the Village of the Sparks above. In the book, it explained, “The people from the dying city of Ember had come up into the new world only a few days before.”
2.Settings are very important in Fantasy, because the changes in them can create a conflict. In the "People of Sparks", the people of Ember moved to live with the people of Sparks. Later on, the characters face many conflicts. That lead to the war of the two groups. If the setting didn't even change, then the whole book will be about an another completely different story.

The problem changes through my book, first its that The People Of Sparks don’t have enough food and shelter to keep The people of Ember in. Then the problem is that the people of Ember do not know about anything because they have been living in a cave. They dont even know what a chicken is! the setting is also very important because the author of the city of sparks really describes the town of the sparks people so that means it is very important. Another one is that he describes the character really well so the reader can imagine the characters and what they are facing including there characteristics.

It is important, because in helps the readers learn the theme, and helps the author express the theme.
For example, in my book, City of Embers. Doon and Lina both have a very important quests which is saving Ember, when no one tried really hard before. Thus they are heroic, and a very well up stander. The level I will rate this is 5, because it is both an internal and external quest. To take action when they will get in trouble for it.

Fantasy stories should include a lot of problems. In Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, a lot of problems appeared in the story. “No Overlander,” said Ares. “The punishment for treason is death.” There’s a lot of problems in fantasy stories. Some are big problems and some are small problems. Ares the bat and Gregor the Overlander is going to be punished and killed. Over some kind of mysterious adventure the problem will be solved. “Nerissa looked up, as if she was surprised at her surroundings. “Trials? For the warrior? Of course there will be no trial! He has saved the Underland.” She got to her feet, using Vikus for support, and saw the other defendants staring at her. She gave them a small smile, but directed her next line to Ares. “And all who helped him are held in highest regard.” Overall, the problem came to the solution. Fantasy stories should also be mysterious at some point. The author left a mystery in the end. “But what would happen when the Bane grew up in a year or so? Would it become the monster predicted the prophecy, or an entirely different creature?” The author left it a mystery for the reader. The author probably wants the reader to read on to the next book. Fantasy stories always have well explained settings. “It’s a round, large shaft, very deep, half-filled with water. The serpents sleep on its floor,” said Twitchtip.” The author explained the Tankard (tunnel-like cave) throughly so the reader can picture the setting.

In Gregor the Overlander The Prophecy Bane, there was a lot of problems but the main problem was where the prophecy said to kill the white rat, Bane. He didn’t want to kill the rat because it was a baby, but people thought that when it grew up it would do something bad to Regalia, and they thought Gregor as a traitor. Another problem was not being able to find Luxa. She was the queen of Regalia and all of a sudden, she was missing! People thought that she left, or she sacrificed for Boots, Nobody knows.

We have been learning a lot in our minilessons with Mr. D and in practicing these skills and observing these features in book club. For instance, I now am knowledgeable that fantasy novels have themes... and not just one theme, but many themes. In the book "Harry Potter," I uncovered that one of the main themes was bravery. I know this from the quote in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" in chapter 3 which says, "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

Themes are an important feature in fantasy texts. Without themes, the reader won't be able to learn a lesson alongside the main character. Also, the main character's motivation typically comes with the theme and the theme results from the problem / conflict happening. Without the theme, all of these elements will be lacking.

The problem is important because if we don't have any problems, there won't be any reason WHY we should read fantasy. Not only in fantasy, but in other books, too. For example in my story, the two main characters has to protect a dragon called Emmy from St. George who's trying to eat Emmy's blood!! It's in page 100, and it continues till the end. But, if we don't have problem, the story isn't going to flow, and it is going to end at the introduction. No one would read books like that. So, this is why problems and solutions are an important feature in fantasy.

In the story, the author described the setting with a lot of details. “He took in the stone bleachers that rose up around a stage that sat right in the middle of the circular room.” The author described the room with a lot of details. Fantasy stories should also include lots of details, so the reader could picture what was happening. “At first, there was just a faint scratching in the wall. Then a skittering sound. And suddenly, it was as if the kitchen were alive. Scores of small, clawed feet were running around and around inside the walls. Only a thin layer of plaster separated Gregor and his parents from them.” The author told us about the scratching from the rats, and the author explained it with details.

Our job is just to keep it from breaking down. If a part breaks, we got to put a new one. If a part freezes up, we got to oil it. I’ve been working on the generator for twenty years. It’s always managed to chug along, but this year. . . I don’t know. The thing seems to break down every couple minutes,” said one of the pipe workers, this is a big problem for Ember and the citizens of Ember, but there is always a solution. Eventually Lina and Doon found the way and informed Mrs. Murdo to help every one escape.

Fantasy stories should have lots of dialogue too, characters should be interacting with each other throughout the whole story. In Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane. “Luxa! What are you doing?” gasped Gregor. “What are you doing, Overlander? Here in the jungle in the company of rats?” she asked coolly. What was she talking about? What was going on? “We needs rats!” sputtered Gregor. “You don’t understand!” In the story, there were lots of talking going on, and the author explained each characters feeling and emotions. In that part, the author described the characters emotions and thinking. In fairy tales there should also include a lot of setting description. “They were vines. Thick, ropy vines that wove in and out of one another and towered high above his head. From them issued a humming sound that was vaguely mechanical. There were clicks and whirrs and taps. The whole jungle buzzed with life.” The author described the jungle they were in. If the author didn’t describe the setting, the readers won’t be able to get what was going on, and the reader won’t be able to picture what was happening in the story. Setting description is very important for fantasy stories. Throughout the story, the characters came across a lot of difficult problems, and they had to find out the solution and move on. Describing the setting and explaining the characters emotion really helped the reader to picture they story in their mind. Descriptive setting and dialogues are very important in fantasy stories

But throughout the story, he became brave and more responsible. He fought rats in the Underland, he persuaded cockroaches & he helped his friends and companions. In the story it said, “No problem,” said Gregor, but inside he wasn’t so sure.” This part is when Gregor just arrived in the Underland. He was scared and he was afraid.

The character’s transformation is a very important feature in fantasy. That’s because it helps the author express the theme, and it makes the reader learn alongside the character. In my book Lina and Doon before there quest is young, tempered, because when Doon got the job messenger, he crumbed the note and threw it to the ground. Also Lina is afraid of people in power, because when she got found by the Mayor on the roof, the first day delivering the massage, she was afraid. But during the quest, getting out of Ember Lina and Doon, are risk takers , brave, perserve, and carring for ech other (Lina and Doon) trying to find the way out of Ember. Also when Lina is captured by the Mayor, she turned brave. Then after the quest, they turned mature, experiencing the difficulty of the dragons, risktaking , carring and kindness, when they informed their Ember people.
So overall, the theme is caring, bravery, risktaking , perserve, and kindness

In my story, I'm going back to the book The Castle in the Attic, and the main character, William, has to go through some challenges, which taught him a lot.
As I mentioned, characters are important. Like, really important. In my story, the character learns things, too. My character learns how to be responsible, and do things himself. The cool thing was, that I also learned alongside the main character. I learned that I shouldn't act just the way I want to, but the way that I had to. I learned this because of William. When he was defeating Alastor, he had to be a Risk taker, because he had to do things by himself. I learned that I should too, and I learned a lot of things firm this book

At the outer border of Ember, she didn't get out of Ember. Not even once. However, when the City of Ember was dying, Lina and Doon was the captain of other citizens, escaping from their home.
2. Character transformation is very important in fantasy, because it can explain the theme. For example, in “The City of Ember” series, the theme is try new things. In the series, Lina escaped the dying city first, followed Maddy and Casper to the destroyed city, and went back to Ember to help the People of Sparks. Of course, in some of that adventure, other main character Doon, followed Lina. Well, Lina didn’t even go on an adventure when she was living in Ember happily, but after she and Doon escaped the city of Ember, she started going on an adventure on every books in the series (not including the Prophet of Yonwood).

1) Another fantasy feature I found in fantasy texts is character transformation. For example in “The City of Ember” series, one of the main characters, Lina, is having lots of transformation. She had a normal life in the city at first, on page 25 the third paragraph it states, “......” Lina had a wonderful life and she never thought about leaving the city and explore outside of the City of Ember and what would it be like, or trying new things and being risk taking to find an exit of the city. Until when the city was dying, Lima and Lina’s friend Doon we’re finding a way out, and they led the whole citizens of Ember to escape from their home.

2) Character transformations are really important in fantasy texts, without character transformation there wouldn’t be a theme in the story, and the problem and esolution would be boring to read. In “The City of Ember” series, I found the theme was trying new things. In the series, Lina secretly followed Maddy and Casper to a destroyed city, then Maddy and Lina secretly without Casper knowing came back the the Village of Sparks. But some of the Adventures Lina didn’t go by herself, she went with another main character, which is also Lina’s friend, Doon. Lina and Don risked their lives and went back to there old home the City of Ember after living tin the Village of Sparks for many months, they found out that nothing was the same as usual it was old and dirty, but then they found out that they were trapped, so they tried to escape from the City of Ember again. Lina is going on adventures in every book in “The City of Ember” series, except for the book “The Prophet of Yonwood”.
