Sirens are creatures within Greek mythology, known for luring sailors with their song. They are half-bird, and half-woman, as a result of Demeter giving them the bodies of birds in order to help them find Persephone. There are supposedly three sirens, found on a small island off of the coast of Naples singing their song to lure in sailors to their death. The origin of the sirens supposedly is that they were former handmaidens of the goddess Persephone, and when she was abducted by Hades, Demeter gave them the bodies of birds to assist in the search. The sirens have aan unnaturally powerful pull, with any man being lured in by their song. To quote the Odyssey, "... the island of the Sirens, those creatures who spellbind any man alive, whoever comes their way."

Odysseus instructs his crew to wax their ears and to tie him to the mast, telling them to ignore whatever he may say while under the sway of the Siren's song. He is well aware of the risks involved with listening to them, and could plug his ears, but desires to listen to them regardless. Odysseus states, "Therefore pass these Sirens by, and stop your men's ears with wax that none of them may hear."

The main theme of the Sirens is that temptation is a large danger to anyone. Sailors tend to be compelled by the Sirens' song to jump to their death, as a result of their temptation to listen to their song.
