My method of reading is all over the place! I highlight stuff or phrases whenever I think they sound good; I write down words that are unfamiliar and sound pretty on my journal. However, if I am doing an academic reading, I highlight stuff that I think are important and emphasize the topic at hand. I have a tendency to skim, which can either waste or save time - by skipping either irrelevant fillers or the most important bits of information.

If I am simply reading for leisure, I do either of the two things: buzz through the whole text if I become utterly absorbed and fascinated by its world; or, if I feel a different kind of fascination, I try to revel in the colorful and descriptive language that a few books try to accomplish. On the other hand, if I am reading for academic purposes, I try to stick in my mind the subject of the text. Remembering the subject helps me answer the guide questions, which supposedly gaugses one's understanding, if they are included at the beginning.

Although I wouldn't necessarily call myself a 'fast reader,' the reading method that I use helps me shorten the time I spend in reading texts. For example, if I am always aware of the topic that I'm supposed to be studying, I don't need to spend several minutes on a single block of text trying to make sense of it.

I read texts depending on my current state or mood! When I feel tired, I don't force myself to understand the texts because I might feel burnt out. But when I feel okay, I try my best to have a better grasp and comprehension of what I'm reading. First, I skim through it all so I'd be aware of how long the texts are. Then, as much as possible, I try to remember it by annotating or even sharing it to other people.

One challenge that I always face and cannot control whenever I'm reading is accidentally spacing out. What happens is my mind branches out within topics until it strays away from the text that I am reading. I could be reading about something about birds and the next minute, I'm thinking about the caterpillars in my backyard.

Some of the challenges that I have already encountered when reading are distractions and disorientation. Sometimes, I get so preoccupied that my attention diverts to another context. As a philosophy major, it took me some time to adjust to reading a lot of texts and actually "understanding" them, compared to when I was in a STEM-oriented system, where we're more focused on calculating and memorizing. During challenging times like this, it will take a while for me to get back on track, but rest assured that I really do! 😁

In my opinion, what makes reading difficult is when one really doesn't have an idea of what they are reading. I can also say that it's difficult if it is not in your intentions and interests. However, we must also consider the fact that we have different ways of reading; hence, we cannot assume that what works for us will also work for other people! Reading is difficult in a way when you often wonder what you're really reading, but it also gets easier if we have the right frame of mind.

I think one thing that makes reading difficult is how there will always be some sort of uncertainty regarding our interpretations. We can never confirm our assumptions about a certain text unless the writer explicitly states the meaning behind their works - if there is one. I think this can both be a good and bad thing. Like discussed during our meeting, literature can neither be subjective nor objective. And I think the same thing can be said for reading - it can't be objective, following the writer's intentions, when the reader and their interpretations exist. It can't be completely subjective when there are several factors involved during the writing process that will also somehow affect the final product and interpretations.
