2. Bonfire Night

The reason why I chose this word is Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, which is celebrated in the UK every year on 5 November. It is one of the most popular festivals in Britain. As it is not a public holiday, the parties are held on the weekend.

I explained the story to you:

In the year 1605 Guy Fawkes and his catholic friends wanted to kill the protestant King James I and his ministers. They wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They put barrels with gunpowder in the cellar of the Parliament. The King was informed about this treason and plot (Verschwörung) and sent his soldiers to the cellar. There, they found Guy Fawkes and his friends and arrested them. Later they were executed. The King ordered that the people should celebrate this event every year with bonfires.

I told you about 'Remembrance Day', a very important National Day in the UK and other countries.

• When is it?

  On the 11 November, because on that day in 1918 at 11 a.m. the first World War ended.

  Remembrance Sunday is on the nearest Sunday to 11 November (this year on 13 November)

• Why is it celebrated?

  People remember the fallen soldiers of the two world wars.

• What do they do?

  People wear paper poppies (because poppies are symbol of remembrance: colour red = blood + the poem 'In Flanders Fields' describes a combat field with poppies).

  There are parades everywhere, and flowers and wreaths are laid down at war memorials.

• Who celebrates it?

  All people in Britain. The most important are the veterans, the Royal Family, the politicians, the mayors and other officials. They give speeches and lay down wreaths.

• How is it celebrated?

  With parades, music and paper poppies. At 11 a.m. there is a 2-minute-silence.

The word comes from Latin "exūberāns". Put together from ex (“out”), and uber (“udder = Euter”), and originally described an overflowing supply of milk from the udder of a cow or goat.
The earliest known use of the adjective exuberant is in the early 1500s.
We talked about the Olympic Games and made sentences with the word 'exuberant'.

It comes from the Latin language and the French language.
instruere = anweisen / instruction = Anweisung / Old French = instruccion / Late Middle English = instruccion
We talked about the time, when the French language entered the English language. This happened when 'William the Conquerer' won the battle of Hastings in 1066 and became King of England. He was Norman and spoke French. He wanted the English people to speak English, but they didn't want to and went on speaking Old English. But many French words entered the English language over the years at that time.

The noun descendant comes from the verb

"descend", which means to move in a downward direction.

OFFSPRING (Sprössling)

The word "offspring" comes from the Old English word "ofspring," which means "those who spring off (from someone = hervorgehen aus)". The Old English word "ofspring" is made up of the words "of" (away) and "springan" (to spring=springen, spriessen). The word "offspring" was first used in English in the 8th century.

A groove is an indentation (Einkerbung) or rut (Spurrinne) in something — like the grooves on an old record.

The word comes from a Scandinavian source such as Old Norse grod "pit," or from Middle Dutch groeve "furrow, ditch", both from Germanic *grobo (Graben).
If you can't "find your groove," you feel off track and not in balance. But when you're "in the groove," everything is working smoothly and you've found a good routine.
And if someone says "let's groove!", they want to dance.
