Peter Barnes in his passage, "How to Save the Middle Class When Jobs Don’t Pay", explores Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend as an example of what the rest of America can achieve. Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend, created by Jay Hammond, utilizes Alaska's abundant amount of oil deep in the Earth's crust, to earn money to give back to the people. Peter states that the dividend greatly improved their economy, decreased the amount of poverty, and has made Alaska the most equal state, which is why the USA needs to implement this system. Barnes believes America should profit off companies wanting to put carbon into the atmosphere. According to him, the ploy would allow every citizen to earn $5,000 a year, changing countless lives for the better. In conclusion, Peter declares that us citizens need to spot the oppurtunity to call for a new economic system.

Alaska's Pemanent Fund Dividend operates tremendously for their state, since there is an enormous amount of oil in Alaska and applying a price to oil is easy. Placing a price on carbon entering the air would be complex, because most if all companies produce CO2. Would we request more money from companies who put out tons of greenhouse gases? How do we detect the amount of gases a company releases? Who determines the cost of depositing carbon into our atmosphere? I would love to construct a system that would help the citizens of America have an affordable way to attend college and be able to access healthcare without paying heavy fees, but Peter's plan has some holes and questions that need to be solved. Taxing the rich at higher percentages, not allowing tax cuts to monopolized companies or wealthy citizens, and slightly decreasing the military budget would be a superior solution of unequality in the United States.
