Les anciens cimetières à l’intérieur de la ville ont été fermés et de nouveaux lieux d’inhumation créés en dehors des murs de l’époque. Les ossements de nombreux anciens cimetières, comme ceux du cimetière des Innocents ont d’ailleurs été déplacées vers d’anciennes carrières, devenues ensuite les Catacombes de Paris.
