Indian food has influenced Scottish food throughout the years after the british colonised India. After the British Empire colonised India they went in search for spices to bring back to the UK. Following the exit of the British Empire there was a group of Indians who moved to the UK bringing the culture of food with them. It took a while for the food to take off in Britain but after a while the food became popular and still is to this day.

In Scotland food is a big part of the culture. In terms of inventions Scotland has been apart of a few. One of the more famous foods is the Chicken Tikka Masala. The Chicken Tikka Masala was invented by a Bengali immigrant who settled in Glasgow. The dishes popularity shows how the culture of asian food is very much apart of society in Scotland. In Scotland, Chinese takeaways are a very popular weekend dish for most families in Scotland. There are approximately 4,000 Chinese takeaways in Scotland (Invitation Digital Ltd). This shows how asian culture and food in particular has imbedded itself in the homes of scottish families.

Scotland has been influenced by many different cultures over the years. From Vikings to the English there has been a lot of different food used to keep the population from starving in the 1990s there was a famine that heavily affected Scotland and caused many deaths, this was the last famine that Scotland has faced.

While Scotland is influenced by overseas culture. We also have food that is distinct to us. For example the deepfried mars bar. There are many fish and chip shops that claim they are the place where the fried mars bar was made, however, due to my bias I believe it was made in Edinbrugh. Mars bars were first invented in 1932 in England(“Our Story”) and after becoming a favourite in british households, fish and chip shops began selling these fried mars bars in the 1980’s(P0shAdmin). While traveling the world in the modern day English is spoken by 1.35billion people around the world and approximately 360million have it as a first language(Lyons). This shows how the English language is widely used by many around the world.


The Scottish language has been influenced by many different other languages. The language considered to be the scottish language is Scots gaelic. Approximately 60,000 people(digitalimpact). Scots gaelic came from Ireland in the 4th century and became Scotlands main language and was spoken by the majority of the population. Since the 18th century English influence has been strong and English is now the main language spoken across scotland with 1% of the population speaking Scots Gaelic.

In Scotland the Main influence over the language is English with the language being the official language of Scotland. While English is the official language many words are altered making what sounds like a dialect of English to foreigners that come visit.

While Scotland has gone through many transitions of languages being spoken in the country. In the modern day many Scottish people speak a slang of English often referred too at Scotlish. Scotland is one of four countries in the UK. Historically England viewed the people of scotland as barbaric animals and have tried to take over scotland many times before but have never truly succeed. Scotland is believed to have been formed in the 9th century 843AD making is the second oldest country in Europe. Throughout Scotlands history there have been many languages across the land. English,Scots Gaelic and Nordic languages are just some of the languages that frquently visited the country.
