Immediately after World War II, tensions between the United States and USSR escalated, as Soviet forces occupied nearly all of Eastern Europe and set up Communist governments there as a buffer between the Soviet Union and the capitalist West. NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is an alliance of 28 member countries roughly bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. Includes Canada, the United States, Turkey and most members of the European Union. The principle that the US should give support to countries or peoples threatened by Soviet forces or communist insurrection. First expressed in 1947 by US President Truman in a speech to Congress seeking aid for Greece and Turkey, the doctrine was seen by the communists as an open declaration of the Cold War. The Marshall Plan was an American initiative to aid Europe, to help rebuild European economies after the end of World War II. The Cuban missile crisis was a crisis between Cuba and the US. Where the US suspected missiles from Cuba. Cuba was turning communist since they were wanting aid from the Soviet Union. The Cuban removed their missiles if the US didn't invade them anymore anymore but the US had to get rid of their missiles in Turkey.

The Iron Curtain was the notional barrier separating the former Soviet bloc and the West prior to the decline of communism that followed the political events in eastern Europe in 1989. Stalin broke his promise of free elections in Eastern Europe and installed governments dominated by the Soviet Union. Then American critics charged that Roosevelt, who died two months after the conference, had “sold out” to the Soviets at Yalta. The Warsaw Pact is the name commonly given to the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union, which was signed in Poland in 1955 and was officially called 'The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance.
