Without eye contact it would give the audience the impression that you're nervous, or even not intrested in being there.

It can come across as quite hostile and cold if a performer doesn't talk to their audience. Most people go to gigs to find a connection to their favourite artists as well as their music so it's good if you introduce yourself,  ask how they are, and if you have any well known songs then ask them to sing along. My favourite performance of all time is a perfect example of this. Which is a list/lineup of songs that you will play at the gig. To plan your setlist you will need to think about and add songs with variety in tone, tempo, dynamics.
