The scarlet ibis bird is symbolic to the story "The Scarlet Ibis" because of the significant role it plays in portraying the author's tone of love, frailness, guilt, and to its farthest extent, death. The narrator describes their first instance from when he and Doodle found a rare Scarlet Ibis from there own backyard. In detail, the narrator calls the scarlet ibis tired, its wings drooping low, and its wings were "uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down" (423). In this description, the scarlet ibis is also symbolic to those who are weak and born with disabilities (Doodle). He continues by saying, "bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud." (423) The narrator is foreshadowing Doodles death. He uses very similar imagery for Doodle's death as he compares him to the bird.
The narrator uses the scarlet ibis to show a high form of respect for Doodle. Both characters died from overuse of energy and exhaustion.

The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle. Both had died in a place where they did not belong. "A scarlet ibis! How many miles it had traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree." (424) The bird was from somewhere between South America to Florida. Doodle died alone under a tree in the rain.

The scarlet ibis is a symbol of Doodle's journey. The bird is weak and diminished from fighting the storm that brought it there. Doodle is weak from his condition that he had as a newborn. "At that moment the bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud." (423) Through much effort, Doodle practiced his running and rowing in the boat, but he was still not able to keep up with his brother.
