We believe this event in history was not caused by actual witchcraft. Many factors such as fear, competition for power and fame, and the growing division of Salem may have all contributed to the chaos.

Also, many people who were fearful of the witches, were ignorant to the abnormalities behind all the killings and accusations of witchcraft.

The division of Salem may have helped cause one of the factors of people's belief of witches. On the map we were shown, it contains the separation between the Eastern and Western sides. They were separated based on wealth, possibly leading to why the poorer side (West) wanted to retaliate against the richer side (East).

Needless to say, women were not considered equals during the trials. It is possible that for some, the Salem Witch Trails were looked at as a perfect scheme and maybe only oppurtuinty for women to gain attention from the community. Many females would falsely accuse one another of witchcraft or claim that you were tortured by a witch. By doing this, one could get the sympathy, power, and fame from everyone in Salem.

"According to Paul Boyer, ... the people in the eastern half of Salem Village gained in wealth and political influence. The people in the western half of Salem Village farmed poorer land and lost political power" (Doc E).There were more witches on the side where they had less money and less political power. The richer side accused more of the witches, showing it could have been a political/financial issue of the society

The accused witches were found more in groups, as defenders and accusers weren't

In Document D it sates, " ...by the terrible success of their imposture (acting)... nothing but the blindness of the bewildered community saved them from... well deserved punishment."

The quote above is saying that when the city of Salem was in total panic, many girls took advantage of the new growing fear of witches. Their false claims killed many, scared the people of Salem, and was only believed because the citizens were in such hysteria.

In Doc C, Bridget Bishop is on trail for witchcraft and Samuel Parris, the minister of Salem Village, recorded the examination. He records that when Bishop shook her head, and the afflicted were tortured.

Since this was written by a bias source, what happened during could very easily be different from whats described. Since no specifics were given on how the girls were harmed, they could have been pretending. Nothing recorded was out of the ordinary that couldn't have been acted.
