Minuit and other Dutch founded the area with the intent of living there and trading with the local Native Americans. However, the colony was eventually handed over to England in 1664, and more specifically to William Penn. Being a propriety state to Penn, William intended to merge the state with Pennsylvania in hopes to give the state some coastal territory. However, both the people of Delaware and Pennsylvania opposed this, and they remained individual of one another. Initially, they fled to bordering territories, but as settler activity in America increased, the space for the Natives decreased.
