Delaware was founded in 1638 by Dutch settler Peter Minuit. Minuit and other Dutch founded the area with the intent of living there and trading with the local Native Americans. However, the colony was eventually handed over to England in 1664, and more specifically to William Penn. Being a propriety state to Penn, William intended to merge the state with Pennsylvania in hopes to give the state some coastal territory. However, both the people of Delaware and Pennsylvania opposed this, and they remained individual of one another. Delaware later went on to become a state in 1787, and was named individually after the Delaware river.

After their trading with the Dutch started to phase out, the Natives to Delaware (also known as the Lenape) were displeased to find out that they were being forced out of their territory. Initially, they fled to bordering territories, but as settler activity in America increased, the space for the Natives decreased. They were eventually forced into Oklahoma along with other Natives.
