1. "Having Students leave your classroom excitedly talking about the lesson has a value beyond merit pay and tenure". P. 8
I chose this quote because I think it is extremely important for teachers to value the excitement and growth of their students more than the material rewards.
2. "Though it is true that subject mastery is critical in effective teaching, research reveals that teachers skilled in pedagogy, the art and science of teaching, especially teaching methods and strategies, outperform teachers with superior subject area knowledge". P. 16
This quote is significant because it makes it clear that knowing subject material may not be enough, it is important to be skilled in teaching and to reach your students. To talk with them, not at them.
3. "Teaching is a complex work that cannot be fully mastered in the short period of teacher education". P. 19
When you become a teacher it is normal to mess up a little bit and your lessons may not go as smoothly as you think they will. It is about practice and learning how to become the best teacher you can be.

1. " A creative mind discovers new ways of looking at the world, and offers new insights and a fresh way of thinking".
P. 30
If you open your mind to other peoples views and opinions it will only benefit you. As a teacher especially you need to take everyone's different views and backgrounds into account at all times, while expanding your own way of thinking.
2. "Educators frequently try to shape their instruction to match a student's learning style. - But is this the best approach"? P. 34
This quote proves a good point, if you try to please every students learning style its impossible and will always put some student at a disadvantage. I think it is best to teach in a style that you're best and portraying the information.
3. "Intelligence testing often overlooks many students who are gifted". P. 39
If you only test students through standardized testing and not through more creative projects or art, you are not allowing some students to achieve up to their full potential.

"You are entering teaching in a time of harsh and diverse "culture wars" as people argue how diversity should be recognized in schools".
P. 68
As a teacher it is important to take your students background and experiences into account at all times.
2. "Schools are one of the portals where diverse Americans meet". P. 67
Being an educator you should use the diversity as an advantage to educate yourself and your students on other cultures and backgrounds.
3. "Recognizing the experiences and histories of all your students is an important first step in creating a climate that honors and celebrates diversity" P.79
This quote is very similar to the one above. I think it is important to emphasize the cultural differences of your students and learn from them.

P. 85
This quote has significance because we as teachers need to make our students more independent. The students should realize how precious learning time is and take advantage of it without their hands being held every minute of the day.
2. "As gatekeepers, teachers must determine who will talk, when, and for how long, as well as the basic direction of the communication". P. 87
Communication is key in a learning environment, each student should have a chance for their voice to be heard.
3. "Many believe that it is easier for students with similar skills and intellectual abilities to learn together, in same-ability, homogeneous classes". P. 89
I disagree with this quote because I think it is important to mix different learning styles, students each bring something to the table and can benefit from each other.

"Many believe that it is easier for students with similar skills and intellectual abilities to learn together, in same-ability, homogeneous classes". P. 122
It is important to recognize how far we have come as a society from this quote. I think it is also important to realize how lucky we are to live in a time of acceptance, but to realize we still have a long road to travel.
2. "Many people are unaware that the responsibility for educating Americans is not even mentioned in the Constitution". P. 128
Although I don't think it needs to be mentioned in the Constitution, I think we as a society need to realize that it is a privilege to have access to education like us Americans do, and we should use that to our advantage to improve society as a whole.
3."Such cultural differences can create friction, in and beyond school". P. 138
I don't know if we will ever get away from prejudices and racism, but as teachers it is up to us to teach young people to embrace other cultures, not look down on them. The classroom is the perfect setting to do this in because it is an opportunity to learn as well as teaching acceptance.

"Existentialists maintain that classrooms should be oriented toward the teacher, who should serve as an intellectual and moral role model for the students. The teachers or administrators decide what is most important for the students to learn and place little emphasis on student interests".
P. 160
Although I agree with the "back to basics" method, I still think it is extremely important to take students interests into account.
2. "Although grades are given to facilitate admission to graduate programs, students receive their grades only upon request and are expected to learn only for learning’s sake".
P. 160
This is a different way of doing things, but if students aren't always stressing about passing a class, they will be more focused on the material they are learning.
3. "Constructivism asserts that knowledge cannot be handed from one person to another (from a teacher to a learner) but must be constructed by each learner through interpreting and reinterpreting a constant flow of information".
P. 169
I agree with way of learning because in a way, its putting all of the responsibility in the students hands. They are given the information and what they choose to do with it is in their hands.
