Captain Meriwether Lewis was at the time of his life Thomas Jefferson’s personal assistant. He was born on August 18 1774 into a family of four. The family was him, his sister and his other sibling. His father was a Continental Army lieutenant and died in 1779 after his father’s horse fell into an icy stream while he was homeward bound. His family owned a plantation that was about 1,000 acre and about 10 miles away from Jefferson's home. He joined the army in 1794 and served six years in the Frontier Army. In 1800 he rose to be a captain then served as a paymaster of the First Infantry Regiment of the US Army. Lewis was appointed by Jefferson in early 1801. He was appointed by Jefferson for a political point. Later on Jefferson wrote how Lewis was “brave, prudent, habituated to the woods and familiar with Indian manners and character.” Jefferson asked Lewis to go on the trip to the west after Congress approved the expedition in 1803. He was asked to find a route to the Pacific coast, make friends with Indians, and map the area. People described him as over six feet tall with a lean frame. When the Louisiana Purchase was completed on April 30 1803 it became clear to them that they would need a second in command to help Lewis in the journey. Jefferson and Lewis both thought of William Clark to be the second in command. I would want to bring this man to help me with finding and discovering animals. He would be very nice with helping me and guiding me.

Private Joseph Whitehouse was a private on the Journey with Lewis and Clark. He was born into a family that lived in Fairfax County in Virginia about 1775. He moved to entucky around when he was at the age of 9. He enlisted in the army in 1798 and was serving a second hitch in Captain Russell Bissell company of the First Infantry at Kaskaskia. He was recruited in November 1803 by Captain Lewis. He kept a journal that was all about the journey and more which was published in 1905. I would want him to come with me because he could help with the manual labor and help with discovering things.

Non-Military Sacagawea

Sacagawea was a non military member that went on the trip with Lewis and Clark. She is a Hidatsa Indian that was kidnapped by a war party when she was 12. She was taken from her tribe to be sold into slavery. She was later on bought by a man named Toussaint Charbonneau to be his wife. On February 11 1805 she gave birth to her son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau which became America's youngest explorer. On the journey the Corps of Discovery came across a Indian tribe named the Shoshones. The tribe possed horses that the Corps needed to get across the Rocky Mountains. The leader of the tribe that they came across was no other than Sacagawea’s brother. That helped the Corps purchase the horses to get across the mountains. Sacagawea and her husband Charbonneau was a translator team. Sacagawea could speak Shoshone and Hidatsa while her husband could speak Hidatsa and French which then went to another man by the name Francois Labiche spoke French and English. Sacagawea was the only women with an infant to accompany the 33 members of the party to the Pacific Ocean and back. Sacagawea was also valuable to the Corps because the Indian tribes that saw them thought of them to be friendly because they were traveling with a Indian women with a infant. She also while on the journey remembered the Shoshone trails through the mountains, around the area, over rivers, and more. Those passages helped the Corps out with being able to take short cuts and travel faster. I would want her to come with communicating with the tribes, guiding me along the trail, and showing that I am peaceful.

A plant the Lewis and Clark could have also found was the blue flax. The blue flax is a flower that blooms different colors such as blue or purple around the time of March, April, May, and more. They could have asked about this plant why hasn’t it bloomed yet, why is is blue, why is it purple, and more. The area that it needs to live is in a sunny area where the soil is dry with medium amount of water. It could have benefited the lives of Americans by it being able to cure irritated eyes/improve hair, and wash of tobacco.

Animal #1 Black Tailed Prairie Dog

A animal that Lewis and Clark discovered was a black tailed prairie dog. They mammals that look like a tan color with a whitish or white belly. The tips of their tails are covered in black hair. They have short ears, large black eyes, and are around 14-17 inches tall or long. They weigh around 2-3 pounds. They are normally found on the Great Plains east of the Rocky Mountains. The area is relatively flat and dry with sparsely vegetated grasslands. They mainly feed off of grasses and leafy vegetation. The thing that might of surprised them was the size of them, where they live, and/or the color of them. The size could surprise them because of how small they are and the color could be why do they have black on their tails but tan and white everywhere else. The area could because they could ask how can it survive without hunting or that much vegetation. This could have benefited the lives of Americans by the little food it could give them.

The plant has only three different types the silver buffaloberry, russet buffaloberry, and the roundleaf buffaloberry. They could have questioned how it helped the Indians, why is there different types, and more. The buffaloberry usually stands 2 to 7 feet tall with brown branches some covered in silvery scales, some with smooth edge green, and some with long oval shaped leaves. The plant could have benefited Americans by it giving them food and making multiple different medicines.

Another animal could be the grizzly bear that could have surprised them. Things that could have surprised them was the size, what they ate, area, and more. The grizzly bear is relatively big compared to other animals. They are omnivores so they ate meat and plants. They ate stuff from seeds, berries, roots, fungi to deer, elk, fish, dead animals, and more. They population of this animal back then was around 50,000 in the west and their habitat could of been in the forest, meadows, plains, tundra, and more. The area they live in sometimes is very harsh. They also sleep all winter so they don’t have to live in the harsh environment. This would of benefited the lives of Americans by the fur to keep warm and the food.

The Shoshone Indians was probably one of the most famous Indian tribes the Lewis and Clark had encountered. The Shoshone Indians were also known as the Snake Nation. They lived in the areas both east and west of the Rocky Mountains. They lived in roofless grass huts and hunted fish, birds, and rabbits, and buffalo. The tribe met Lewis and Clark when they were on their way to the Rocky Mountains which helped them when they had Sacagawea because the leader of the tribe was her brother. The tribe helped Lewis and Clark because they were able to purchase the horses need to cross the Rocky Mountains.

Places White Catfish Camp and Winter Camp at Woods River

Two places that they stopped at were White Catfish Camp and Winter Camp at Wood River. White Catfish Camp location is unknown but it is probably submerged by the river channel. The Corps of Discovery stopped at this camp on July 22 1804. The name came from one of the men catching a Catfish out of the river. They stopped at this camp again on the way back from the Pacific Coast to America. The area around them was flatter land with a river. The camp was said by Clark to be near the Otteaus town. They had tried to contact the Otoe and Pawnee tribes near by. It has changed because it is not there anymore because it was submerged in the river. The other area was the Winter Camp at Woods River. The location was originally sited on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river in Hartford Illinois. Since then the river has been dredged. They had stopped here to replenish supplies on December 12 1803. They came back around September 23 1806. It has changed because the river has changed. The area around them was a big river, flat land good for farming, and more.
