As a child Shrek was abandoned and learned to provide his own meals and protection from the
"plot of ground which is given to him to till" by his neighbors. Additionally, the ogre was feared and resented by the humans living near him, resulting in constant threats and attempts of assault on the innocent being. Before his best friend and eventual wife entered his life, Shrek had to "accept the place the divine Providence ha[d] found
for" him despite it being a disease and vermin infested swamp.

The song Carry On by Fun has a resemblance to Self-Reliance through its lyrics depicting the importance of independence, often telling the listeners to "Carry On" and describing scenarios in which an individual must help themselves and not wait to be saved. Such situations include "If you're lost and alone Or you're sinking like a stone" where the person cannot depend on the aid of others. The song is similar to the essay as both pieces emphasize society's tendency to ignore and "grow faint and inaudible" to the needy.

Vincent Van Gogh was a 19th century artist that was regarded as a madman and ignored by most while he lived through his unsuccessful career. After his death, however, Van Gogh's works became increasingly valuable and epitomized as a new style of art.
