Mary Mackillop was born on the 15th of January 1842 in the working class suburb Fitzroy, Victoria. Mary was raised by her parents Alexander Mackillop and Flora MacDonald who were Catholic Immigrants from Scotland, Mary was the oldest of eight siblings. Alexander Mackillop provided education for Mary and her siblings at a private school in Victoria. Mary's Father had a very strong influence on Mary and her religious life. At the young age of 16 Mary moved to Penola, South Australia where she worked as a Governess on her Uncle's Farm. The income that she earnt from this job; she was expected to bring home a portion for her family to help provide a living for them. Penola was a relatively poor town with little education, shelter, food and water supplies and the living conditions where very unhygienic. When Mary moved to Penola she met Father Julian Edmund Tension Woods, he had the same visions and aspirations as Mary; both wanting to help provide the less fortunate with education. Father Woods became Mary's mentor, guiding her in Jesus's footsteps. In 1866 Mary had the opportunity to help the less fortunate by transforming a stable into a stone building where she was able to teach the needy. One year later Mary became the schools first sister and leader and within 4 years, 130 sisters joined the school 'Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart' all devoting their life to teach the less fortunate. During this time Mary struggled; the school was deemed unsafe/unsuitable for a permanent school so all students and sisters rented a new schoolhouse still located in Penola. Mary's challenges involved money, supplies, food, water, shelter and on the 19th of December Mary's Father has passed away. However, Mary never gave up she pursued her dream of helping the poor by founding orphanages, hospitals and shelters for the homeless, ex-prisoners and ex-prostitutes. Mary continuously walked in Jesus's footsteps and her devotion to God's work was seen through her dedication to helping the poor. Many women in today's society see Mary Mackillop as an inspiration.

Miracle Story:
Matthew 14:22-33
"When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going."

World behind the text:

The miracle story was set in a town called Capernaum. In the community of Capernaum previously it was called the town of healing, several times in this location Jesus had attempted miracles which had come true healing the suffering. We know that Jesus was a man who was noble always devoting his time to helping others and had the power of trying miracles. Whenever people needed help or where suffering Jesus was there, helping these people. The miracles and power of healing in this town where an indication of God's power.

World of the text:
The word's of wisdom Jesus shared with his disciples whilst walking on water inspired his disciples to keep on going (reach your goal, dream or vision) as you have me (Jesus) walking alongside you (disciples). The purpose of this miracle story is to show that the power of believing is so strong so, show this in your everyday life as Jesus is there for you.

World in front of the text:
I believe the author wrote this miracle story to show that if you have a vision/goal insight you should reach for it, keep going and you will be able to do it. The author might have also written this story to help readers understand that although they saw Jesus walking on water, Jesus is always with everyone walking beside everyone as they journey through life. Although it was dark, rough seas and strong wind the disciples pushed through and reached the end. This story has such a strong and important message to not give up on your dreams, goals and visions keep going! The future generations would be a great audience, this message would have a very strong meaning and impact. This message is important because of the continuing development of our society, with the development of technology, transport schools etc more people are depending on these everyday resources however, anyone is able to be themselves, use their own mindset to reach their goal.

This parable of Jesus walking on water inspired Mary Mackillop to keep helping the needy and spread her actions to other individuals. Although, there where challenges Mary knew she always had Jesus by her side supporting her and inspiring her every step of the way. Mary walked in Jesus's footsteps all the way through her life exampling Jesus's actions to the needy as she knew she was here for a reason and this is what God wanted her to do.

Malala Yousafzai has such a strong connection to Mary Mackillop and is a very devoted and inspirational women of today's society. At the age of 15 Malala was shot in the right side of her head by the Taliban because she campaigned for girl's rights to education. Since her shooting Malala has not stopped advocating for girls rights to education, constantly devoting time to providing girls with education in countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, India, Brazil and Afghanistan. Malala created an organisation called 'Malala Fund' an international, non-profit association advocating for girls education. Malala demonstrates priestly work by repeatedly speaking out and helping young girls in other countries, using donations from all across the world to build schools, fund supplies and teachers so girls can experience education. Malala shows Kingly work by founding the Malala Fund and showing courage and resilience when faced with difficulty however, she doesn't give up and she knows that this is a problem in are world that needs to be resolved. Finally, Malala showed prophetic work when she delivered the 'hope that the people could speak for what they believed in and still live'. This speech empowered many girls to share their voice and inspire others to stand up for themselves. The work Malala has done has influenced so many young people and Malala is only 25. Malala believes in equality, joy, spirit and happiness and with her work she continues to deliver that to the less fortunate just like Mary Mackillop. “We need to encourage girls that their voice matters. I think there are hundreds and thousands of Malala's out there.” - Malala

Mary Mackillop continuously strived to follow the footsteps of Jesus as she devoted her time to demonstrate many priestley, kingly and prophetic works of Jesus. In everyday life Jesus demonstrated multiple actions of priestly, prophetic and kingly works. In the bible priesly means "one especially consecrated to the service of a divinity and through whom worship, prayer, sacrifice, or other service is offered to the object of worship - and pardon, blessing, or deliverance is obtained by the worshipper". Jesus demonstrated priestly actions when he sacrificed his life on the cross for us. Mary demonstrated priestly work when she taught the less fortunate to have a relationship with God to trust and listen, by making and sharing the Eucharist with everyone in all centres of life. It is clear the Jesus demonstrated a kingly role when he shared the stories and the good of God to many people. Mary showed kingly work by being the founder/leader of St Joseph’s school, leading along side the other sisters. Mary was described as a servant leader helping her community, and guiding many to show service, humility and to follow in God's footsteps. The bible says that prophetic means “accept the Gospel in faith and to proclaim it in word and deed.” Mary demonstrated prophetic work when teaching the poor and spreading positivity to the underprivileged children, and sharing the glorious stories of God.

The Rerum Novarum is a large piece of writing; written by pope Leo XII in 1891 on the 15th of May. This piece of writing was written during Mary Mackillop's life therefore showing that Mary Mackillop was the inspiration behind the Rerum Novarum. This piece of writing covers many issues in the time of Mary Mackillop such as money, work, responsibilities, duties and the Government. Many verses reflect the life of Mary Mackillop however, these two particular verses depict her life mission.

Verse 28: "Neither must it be supposed that the solicitude of the Church is so preoccupied with the spiritual concerns of her children as to neglect their temporal and earthly interests. Her desire is that the poor, for example, should rise above poverty and wretchedness, and better their condition in life; and for this she makes a strong endeavor. By the fact that she calls men to virtue and forms them to its practice she promotes this in no slight degree. Christian morality, when adequately and completely practiced, leads of itself to temporal prosperity, for it merits the blessing of that God who is the source of all blessings; it powerfully restrains the greed of possession and the thirst for pleasure-twin plagues, which too often make a man who is void of self-restraint miserable in the midst of abundance;(23) it makes men supply for the lack of means through economy, teaching them to be content with frugal living, and further, keeping them out of the reach of those vices which devour not small incomes merely, but large fortunes, and dissipate many a goodly inheritance."

Verse 37: "The richer class have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in need of help from the State; whereas the mass of the poor have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must chiefly depend upon the assistance of the State."

These two verses state how everyone has the right to be equal, that our world needs to rise up and help the poor so that we can all unite and be one. The poor people have to ask for assistance, protection they don't have dependability they need help from the state, whereas the richer class can protect themselves, they have money to buy resources, food and supplies making them more dependable. Mary Mackillop helped the poor providing hospitals, education, orphanages and shelter for the needy. Everyone has the right to be religiously respected, God blesses all people and Mary highlights this through her actions to help the poor.

This is a letter Mary Mackillop wrote to her mother in 1867 from Adelaide addressed to Fitzroy Victoria:

"My dearest Mamma,

You are punishing me for my long delay in answering your last letter, but if you are well and your mind happy, I have cause to be thankful indeed. I never have cause to be anything else.

My Father Director has given me permission to write once a month to you – ‘tis now five weeks since I last wrote, and if my poor letters can give you any comfort, you shall, please God, have them regularly in future. My love and feeling for you have not cooled. I remember all the past but cannot grieve, nor can I when I think of your present lonely position, for at the same time I think of our dear, good and merciful God who has so honoured you and me, and it seems to me but a very poor offering I have to make Him when I lay your loneliness and sorrow before Him and beg of Him to accept my poor heart in spite of its unworthiness, and to be Himself your sweet and only Comforter. Oh Mamma, if you but knew what the Sisters of St Joseph ought to be, and can be, too, if they but correspond with the graces they receive, you would rejoice more and more every day that you have one child amongst them and you would try to send another too. Now I suppose you will shake your head at this, but never mind, I am sure you won’t resist God’s Holy Will, and when the proper time comes, I hope dear Lexie will come too, but it will be sooner than you think, at least I hope so. Did Peter like his letter? The poor child must have thought I had forgotten him. I cannot write more, for ‘tis time to go to bed – and I have not permission to sit up. You know I have to obey our holy Rule to the letter. Pray, my own dear Mamma, that I may have the grace to do so.

Monday morning – Father Woods is going to the North today and will see Donald. The poor boy will also think I am neglecting him – but when I know he is well, I do other things instead of writing to him. Give John my love when you write, and please tell him that, though I am a poor Nun at last, he may write to me.

Fond love to yourself and pray, dear Mamma for
Your affectionate child in J.M.J.
Mary of the Cross – Sister of St Joseph

Please write to me, and give Papa my love – ask him to write too."
Mary writes about the Sisters of St Joseph and the work they continuously did to help provide for the less fortunate. Mary was so grateful to be in the position she was in and have the opportunity to help the poor; she also wrote about how much she missed her mother and papa and siblings. Mary included prayer and strong meaningful words to make sure everyone is well and continues to stay healthy. This letter shows how Mary devotes her love to everyone and shares this contagious action with others around her.
