Dyslexia is a learning disorder that causes difficulty with reading due to issues with identifying speech sounds, and their relation to letters and words. Dyslexia affects areas of the brain that work to process language. Children and Adults that suffer from Dyslexia have normal intelligence and vision, and they are still able to succeed in school with help from tutors or a specialized learning program, as well as emotional support. There’s no cure for dyslexia, however, early recognition can lead to the best outcome.

There are some early signs that may indicate dyslexia, especially when a child starts learning to read. Some clues that a child may be at risk of dyslexia includes late talking, learning new words slowly, problems forming words correctly, problems remembering letters/numbers/colors, and difficulty learning nursery rhymes. Additionally, once a child had entered schooling, more symptoms may become apparent such as reading well below the expected level for their age, problems processing what they hear, difficulty finding the right word, inability to sound out pronunciation of unknown words, difficulty spelling, or avoiding activities that involve reading.

Dyslexia tends to run in families because it is linked to certain genes that affect how the brain processes reading and language. Risk factors include a family history of dyslexia, premature birth, exposure during pregnancy to nicotine, drugs, or alcohol, and differences in the parts of the brain that enable reading. Dyslexia can lead to trouble learning in school, social problems, and more problems as adults.

Most children with dyslexia are unable to grasp the basics of reading. It is important to speak with doctors if the child’s reading level is well below what’s expected. When dyslexia goes undiagnosed and untreated, childhood reading difficulties can continue into adulthood.

She explains the difference that a successful dyslexia intervention can have on the improvement in brain function. She also highlights the fact that children with dyslexia can be just as intelligent, if not more intelligent than their peers.

I chose this topic because my Aunt actually has dyslexia and I thought it would give me a better understanding of what she has experiences and goes through every day. I learned that dyslexia causes difficulty with reading, writing, and spelling most commonly, but this can differ from person to person. I also learned that with time and practice, people who struggle from dyslexia have the capability to function at the same level as their peers. Additionally, children who have dyslexia can be just as intelligent, if not smarter than their peers because dyslexia gifts them a unique way of viewing the world.

I found it very interesting that many adults that have grown up with dyslexia, now view is as a gift and/or an advantage. From the many videos I viewed on reflections of personal experiences relayed the importance of continuing to try even if it may be harder for them because it would all be worth it in the future. They also spoke about the importance of not viewing people with learning disabilities differently, and to view them as equal to all of us. There are true gifts and strengths that can be unlocked within a dyslexic mind.
