Prisoners had to deal with the harsh brutalness of their jailers. Prisoners were flogged, starved, chained and abused by the jailers and then were left alone. Dorothea Dix documented her findings in the prisons and wrote to the legislature of Massachusetts. Everyone was shocked by the reality of prison conditions, so people began to take action to improve conditions in the prison reform movement. Dix's actions resulted in funds being set aside for expansion for both prisons and mental hospitals. They were frequently whipped. Dorothea believed the mentally ill needed a place other than a prison to get treated and Massachusetts currently only had one private asylum. She gathered information that she had found about the prison conditions and treatment of the mentally ill and sent it to the Legislature of Massachusetts. Around the beginning of the 1800's was known as the era of "The Cult of Domesticity". This was when women were seen as nothing more than a way to bring up social status' of men. But afterwards around 1969, Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded the American Women Suffrage Association. During the late 1800's and early 1900's women's organizations worked to get women the right to vote and economic and political equality. The number of women employed went from 2.6 million to 7.8 million. They mostly began to employ in business and industry but 60% of them worked as domestic servants. Women continued to fight to earn the right to control the money they earn, own their property and take custody of kids during divorce. 1896, women earned the right to vote in four states. Many women were against the reform and believed women should keep their gender roles. In 1919, women earned the right to vote with the passing of the 19th amendment.
