What is White Privilege, really?

The term "white privilege" is often misunderstood or interpreted in many different ways. It's something that's taken for granted by white people because growing up white has an advantage, which is often overlooked. Many people don't actually realize that white privilege exists because it's been built into our society. This article called out whites in a respectable way, while also informing and educating people. The more white privilege is ignored, disadvantages will appear more for other races. For it to change, people need to be aware or its presence, which isn't happening. However, a shift is starting to take place and representation is slowly happening in other races.

The Danger of a Single Story

This TED talk was very empowering and showed how much goes unknown in the world. Only knowing a single story limits knowledge and promotes ignorance. Adichie shares her own experiences of making assumptions before learning someone's whole story. While watching, it made me realize how in my own life I jump to conclusions when I have only learned a single story out of many. There is never a single story about a person or place, and when we realize that, everything can be looked at with a different perspective.

How to Overcome our Biases

This TED talk was about how biases can be overcome by looking within and being willing to change ourselves. We have to get out of denial and stop "trying" to be good people. It's easier for us to connect black with negative than it is for us to connect white with negative, and that's the bias. It's a false ideal, and it's stopping people from thriving. To overcome that bias, we need to move towards our discomfort and towards young black men, not away from them.

"The House Slave"

The speaker in this poem is a young slave. He is a house slave, and watches the field slaves get whipped, overworked, and sees them waking up to work before it's light out. This poem can be connected to oppression in black society. The author, Rita Dove, writes in a sad, heavy tone because the speaker realizes how much worse the field slaves' lives are than the house slaves'. The title of the poem also affected my understanding of it because the author is directly explaining and emphasizing the normal lives of the field slaves, when the point of the poem was to really show how the house slaves live superior lives.

This article opened my eyes and made me realize the effects white privilege has our society. We are so used to having these privileges that they easily go unnoticed. It's the norm for white people. While reading this article, I found myself unaware that many of these privileges exist only because someone is white. Many of them aren't available to anyone who isn't white. How are we supposed to change this and make these privileges true for everyone if we don't even know they exist in the first place?

Gender Inequality Worldwide: What's at Stake? (database)

Jane Roberts, the author of this article uses her knowledge from the United Nations Population Fund to inform the public about the afflictions of gender inequality worldwide. Her article made me realize the effects of gender inequality, especially in other parts of the world that I haven't been exposed to. "Women are the givers and keepers of life. When the world takes care of women, women take care of the world." Roberts talks about family planning, marriage, and education, and how gender inequality takes place in every subject. Our priorities must change, and complete gender equality in every aspect of human activity needs to take effect.

Social Media and the End of Gender

This TED talk opened my eyes about social media and the role women play in it. Johanna Blakley predicts the future of social media and women's involvement in it. It gives us a modern view of the idea of gender roles and how they have evolved over time. Media is a very powerful tool that can change people's views and perceptions, and Blakley argues that a balance of gender is very important when informing the public through social media. Currently, most TV and media is run by men, so we only get to see one point of view. With the entry of women, more ideas would be presented and a wider impact would be created on our thinking patterns.

Women of Ideas: And What Men Have Done to Them (database)

This article is an analysis of a book by Dale Spender, called Women of Ideas. The book is about the ways in which men have used their power to silence women. Men have decided what is to be valued, even what is real. The author of the article writes about how she never learned about these problems in school. She says, "It's inspiring to know that women have questioned and challenged male authority for so long, but it is unforgivable that I was never taught these things in school." I found myself thinking the same thing after reading that quote. We are exposed to these ideas and we know they exist, but we never really learn why or how they exist, or what to do about it.

Emma Watson to United Nations: I'm a Feminist

This speech given by Emma Watson was given to UN members, but was no doubt directed towards everyone. Many ideas are presented about gender inequality involving both women and men. Watson says, "It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of two sets of opposing ideals." This quote stood out to me because that was the main point of her message, which is often overlooked when learning about gender inequality. Gender equality is not just women's problems. Watson made sure to get men's attention by shaping her speech to list how gender inequality effects men.

In this TED talk, Michael Kimmel is talking about equality between men and women in the workplace and at home. He talks about the biases between men and women, and how they will always be present. However, he's not talking about who is better or who can get one over another, he's talking about fairness and making life better for all of us. Kimmel says, "Those countries that are the most gender equal, are also the countries that score highest on the happiness scale." This quote stood out to me because it proves that a change needs to be made.
