Welcome to my Star Stream! This is a continuous posting stream of my Star Sightings that anyone and everyone can enjoy. Every day, I will give;

An update on the stars in the sky above, the moon and it’s phases and other planets, satellites and other bodies of mass above our head, thanks to SkyView, an Augmented Reality app that is a pleasure to use*. If you are interested in star gazing and such, read my next post and I can give some helpful pointers!

A rating on what I thought that night’s experience was. I do check on the ratings I receive regularly,so if you do see this, or checkup on it regularly, thank you and please leave an honest rating over what you thought. I value your responses to improve!

I only update when it’s not daylight savings as it’s easier to find the stars without being up late. Also keep an eye out for my special colour-coded posts;

Green Posts are for sightings that I think are special. These might include things like blood moons, satellite sightings and rare, once a year kind of space-related notes

Pink Posts contain fun facts about galactic space and human discoveries, and usually are themed/posted after a green post, so you can understand exactly what I said and how that came to be in simple, easily understandable language, most likely to have a photo attached which is what the event looks like. All used photos are not guaranteed to be my own, but are photos I have found on the internet that has no copyright and is free for me and you to use

Yellow Posts contain notices referring to the stream

*Note that for best use, use the paid version of SkyView (not SkyView Lite). I mentioned this app because it is my preferred app, not for advertising reasons

Thank you, and may many happy sightings of natural wonders meet your eyes, even if they’re in your dreams.

Charlotte P

Super Moon

Last night, a super moon made its way to our skies and was tipped to be the biggest one this year in the Southern Hemisphere. It was just 356,907 km away and was noted to be a pink super moon due to being closer to the Earth because of its elliptical orbit. A super moon is a full moon/new moon that looks bigger than usual and may have a slight pink hue and will be brighter, but is hard to notice with the naked eye.

Interesting Facts about Super Moons are;

No place on Earth is closer to the moon compared with others during a super moon due to the moon’s elliptical orbit of Earth

In order for a full/new moon to be classified as a super moon, the moon has to be within 361,885 km of the Earth, measured from both centres of mass

The closest the moon will get to Earth this year is 356,907km on the 8th of April and the furthest away it will get is 406,692km on the 31st of October, which will be 49,131km further away than tonight’s moon

Some astronomers don’t like the name super moon. They like to call them Hype instead, but their special, not hype, so many people use the term super moon instead

Before they were named super moon, they were know as Perigean Full Moons or Perigean New Moons. Perigee just means near Earth. Apogee is the opposite, and thus means The point of an orbit of a moon or satellite when it is furthest from Earth.

Because the moon is the reason we have tides, the waves will be much bigger, and much smaller during the period before, during and after the moon passes your part of the Earth’s Equator

Welcome to my Star Stream! This is a continuous posting stream of my Star Sightings that anyone and everyone can enjoy. Every day, I will give;

I only update when it’s not daylight savings as it’s easier to find the stars without being up late. Also keep an eye out for my special colour-coded posts;
