Surprisingly, the writer for once seems actually most normal and sane in the room.

Nathan, the director constructs numerous exact replicas of bars, houses and apartments in which stressful situations are going to occur. For example, one participant wants to make a confession to his friend in a pizzeria. One of the many possible scenarios includes eating a pizza. Therefore, a fake oven somehow producing real pizzas has to be operational for each rehearsal attempt.

In this instance, Nathan, the director senses distrust from the guy he aims to help. Nathan figures he would have to reveal something sensitive himself to establish that trust so he mentions his divorce. At that very moment, an elderly swimmer interrupts their conversation. Nathan, the writer narrates that the interruption was designed to naturally stop Nathan, the director from oversharing.

This is one of numerous examples of the series' participants receiving different information from that granted to the viewer by narration. Hence the distinction between the director and the writer.

A recurring motif in Nathan For You is taking an already whacky idea to extreme lengths while making unnecessary side quests. To illustrate one instance I recommend the Antique Shop episode.

It starts off pretty simple: the businessman convinces the shop owner to extend the shop's working hours to increase the probability of a late-night bar frequenting drinkers accidentally smashing antiques and paying for them.

What comes next is not hard to explain but I wish not to derive the reader of the surprises that follow.
