Recently, I had to change my availability for work because I started volunteering at the animal shelter. I went in one day before my shift and communicated with the store manager that I needed to change my availability and request a certain weekend off. I told her the days of the week and the times that I could work as well as discussed with her why I requested that weekend off. She recorded my availability and communicated to me that because there was a high demand for those days, she rejected the request, but I could talk to my department supervisor or request the next weekend off. Now I am able to work my job while also committing to the animals at the shelter that need my help. I also got my request for the next weekend approved and will have more time for school and the dogs.

In the past, I worked at Ross, and I was really interested in being a cashier up front. After working there for a few months, I finally got training for the register and started mainly cashiering. We were timed in the POS system, and it measured our Cashier Performance Rate (CPR). The CPR is broken up into the different parts of the process (Call Next Customer, Scan and Bag, and Process Tender). My and

my manager’s biggest goal starting out as a cashier was to get my CPR as high as possible.Looking at my scores, “Process Tender” was usually the lowest part of my CPR. I was unsure what that section specifically meant so I took it upon myself to ask my managers what it was and for tips on how to raise it consistently. After gathering tips on how to raise it, I would try my best to utilize those tips during my shifts. After utilizing them, I would often find a noticeable positive shift in the quality of my performance. Customers would actually comment on how efficient I was checking them out.Within a month (a little less than a month) of being a cashier, I was able to raise my CPR score consistently above 100%. At many points of me being there, I held the highest score in the store. The job taught me many different skills and my biggest takeaway from working there is to always speak up and ask questions. If something is affecting my job performance, I always make a point to ask someone else what I can do to be better.

This past week, the department I work in was closed due to snow so we had to help the replenishment people stock the store. We did this because people from different departments come to help us all the time and we rarely get the chance to help them in return. Most of the people in our department had never stocked before so we all had to learn how to do it quickly and effectively. Working together with the regular replenishment team we were able to get more done on the floor which gave them more time to do other things they needed to do. We learned how stock is able to get all the products out and gained an additional appreciation for their work.

I began my WBL placement believing that business or marketing would be the career I would pursue after high school, then I wanted to try ASL interpreting. However, I have changed my mind completely after my WBL experience. After around 7 months of working, I have decided to pursue becoming a neonatal nurse. I am thankful that I was able to work a job that taught me the value of helping others and the fulfillment of their thanks. I have grown to appreciate my own power enough to pursue a career that helps people every day. Having had jobs before, this placement really did not teach me anything new but instead allowed me to hone my skills independently and provided many opportunities for self-discovery.

My name is Makala Black and I am a senior at Maryville High School. My focus area in school is Marketing. For Work Based Learning, I am currently placed at the Walmart Supercenter on 411. At Walmart, I am in the Personal Shopper position and that consists of picking merchandise for orders placed online. After high school, I plan to study at Maryville College to become an American Sign Language Interpreter.
