I pretended I was an ESL student I have now in my classroom. It was excellent to see how words can fly right by and so does comprehension. I already use visuals and hands-on activities with lots of discussions, but it helped to cement the practice!
2. Guaranteed vocabulary ensures that all students in each grade level are exposed and taught certain vocabulary on which to build.
3. Essential questions help me focus on the goals for the information, and not go off track. They help me use academic vocabulary and elevate my teaching, maintaining proficiency standards.

My take-away was that students need to experience things rather than just be told in order to learn.
2. Essential questions are what guides the instuction. They are used to elicit critical thinking, as well as provoke inquiry.

1. The woodles activity reminded me of the importance of interactive learning. It is easy to fall into the trap of just delivering content without the kids having a chance to actually "experience" it.... and that is where the best learning occurs.
2. Guaranteed vocabulary are woods that students leaving my class should have a well rounded understanding of. These words are also sequenced in previous years so that they are not repeated.
3. Essential questions are the basic question that all students should be able to answer when a unit it taught. These are the questions that should guide what is taught, activities used and the assessments given.

1. The woodles activity was a reminder that as adults we take certain words and knowledge for granted. Also, as an English speaker it is easy to take vocabulary for granted. The activity made me realize the importance of:
-hands on activities that bring concrete representation to the students
-allowing time for students to practice applying information through various stimuli (model, diagram, chart, passage..etc)
-if students know the definition it is not "enough" to transfer that concept in other ways.

2. Guaranteed vocabulary drives the acquisition of new science content as well as provides for effective student/teacher communication in the classroom. Guaranteed vocabulary are the beginning bricks that build upon the skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) necessary for our students to acquire new science concepts and also allow students produce truly "academic" work in the same aforementioned modes.

3. Essential questions target planning, teaching and assessing of content. Teachers facilitate activities based on students need, students have clear learning objectives, and then last teachers can evaluate learning all aligned on the EQ.

1) The woodles activity helped me realize how important it is to provide hands-on activities to further student understanding. It also allowed me to get a viewpoint from the student. Learning new vocabulary may seem completely foreign to students so, as teachers, we need to provide many opportunities to practice and use the words in different ways.
2) Guaranteed vocabulary is essential in high school biology because it helps to narrow the focus -- especially when there are so many new words introduced in biology.
3) Essential questions help to support and reinforce our content objectives. They serve as a method to measure student mastery and understanding.

It also made me re-think assessments because even though I had no idea what any of the content meant, I was still able to correctly answer some questions on the assessment just through memorization. The assessment definitely did not demonstrate mastery.

2. Guaranteed vocabulary are words that students must master in the grade level. My thinking changed after the woodles activity as I was able to experience introduction of new content as a student would encounter new vocabulary. My initial feeling was jealousy that another class sounded like they were having more fun and I knew they were still learning. I feel a lot of students miss opportunities with teachers that are not engaging or perform experiment with their science students.
Elizabeth Eggleston, 5th grade, Frostwood Reflection Questions:1. How did your thinking change after the woodles activity?I loved that activity. I want my admin to do that for our campus in August. The best demonstration I've seen for pointing out the importance of good teaching and hands on experiences for ELLs and all students. 2. What role does guaranteed vocabulary have in your grade level? It is extremely important in 5th grade because without it the expectation for what all needs to be covered is impossible. 3. What makes a question "essential" and why are Essential Questions important?

1. The woodles activity has challenged me to be more proactive with planning around a varying range of activities. Sometimes it can be so easy to fall into the trap of lecture, lecture, lecture, especially in advanced classes where you tend to be more pressed for time on content.
2. At the high school level, the focus of science classes often shifts towards students' ability to communicate effectively about science. Guaranteed vocabulary is the foundation on which students can begin this process, be it for a formal lab report, exam free-response, or other purpose. They must be able to communicate effectively using accurate scientific terms.
3. Essential questions are closely related to big ideas of a curriculum. They define the roadmap between the beginning and the end of a student's journey through the content. Without the essential questions to guide the student's investigations, they may get lost trying to figure out what is important to fundamentally understand and what is only supporting information.

1. The woodless activity reminded me how awful it feels taking an exam when you have absolutely no idea what is going on! It really motivated me to get after those ELL strategies for my kiddos so that I don't have any students in my classroom feeling that way. It takes my work on my end but the pay off will be way worth it.
2. The guaranteed vocabulary is a more concrete guide to help ensure that students do not feel the way I felt after taking the woodle test! :) It's pointless to shove too many vocab words in the brains of my students to only memorize them for a quiz or a test. They will just forget them when they leave me. However if we focus on a short list of really important words and get them to be experts on those words, they will remember for a longer period of time.
3. Essential questions guide learning. It helps the student know what they are going to learn and what the goal is.
