• Although unintentionally, Mr. and Mrs. White kill their son. This incident represents the unintended consequences of greed.

Get Out:

• Both Rose and Jeremy are groomed by their parents to be used in the Coagula procedure, unable to have lives outside of their parents. This represents how children learn racism from their environment, growing up to further perpetuate it.

The Shining:

• Jack's history of abusing Danny, a result of Jack's isolation and consequent self hatred.

• Grady murdering his family.

• Domestic abuse is included in The Shining as a consequence of the demanding expectations of fatherhood in capitalist society.

The Others:

• Grace kills her children. Although I wouldn't call her parenting abusive, it's smothering, especially towards Anne.

• The impacts of the responsibilities and isolation of single motherhood on Grace's mental health push her to infanticide.

La Llorona:

• La Llorona kills her children; often in an attempt to regain the favor of her wealthy husband who leaves her.

• The history of the Overlook Hotel begins with occupation of Indigenous land, building on top of an Indian burial ground. The hotel then exploits this history by using decor with Navajo and Apache motifs for a white clientele.

• The hotel's "shine" manifests as visions of past guests and staff, revealing previous acts of abuse. Jack's initial conversation with Lloyd acts as justification of his abuse, as Jack defends/excuses his previous violence toward Danny. Wendy ties Jack's abusive nature to his drinking habits during her conversation with Danny's doctor, making Jack's drink with Lloyd a sign that he will repeat his abuse. Additionally, Grady, as a representation of the hotel's history of violence, takes advantage of Jack's capacity to abuse, outright encouraging Jack to kill Wendy and Danny by suggesting that Jack "correct" them the way he did when he was the caretaker of the hotel. When Grady releases Jack from the pantry, he mentions "others," presumably other spirits of the hotel, disapproval of Jack's difficulty in killing Wendy and Danny, showing that the abuse is the hotel's agenda. This is supported by Lloyd's refusal to take Jack's money as an "order from the house."

• Jack's appearance in the 1920s photo and Grady's comment that Jack has "always been the caretaker" to emphasize the cycle of violence at the hotel. People like Jack have existed in the past, and they will exist again.

La Llorona:

• In many versions, la Llorona is forced to repeatedly commit infanticide, spending eternity grieving and searching for her own children whom she murdered.

• The inclusion of a wealthy man/spaniard ties her to larger cycles of violence/abuse like imperialism and classism.

Get Out:

• Racism in general is centered around habitual/systemic violence. The Coagula procedure and the order led by the Armitages represents that system of abuse and stripping of autonomy.

• The Coagula order is often silent when Chris is not present, particularly during the auction scene. This shows the unspoken or subtle racism of white liberals that perpetuate systemic violence.

• However, the ending of Get Out sharply contrasts the beginning, Dre's kidnapping, as Chris escapes from and kills the Armitages. This shows that violence is often necessary to break out of systems of abuse.

Monkey's Paw:

• The fact that the monkey's paw is passed from person to person means a repetition of the violence it causes.

• The orientalist premise of the monkey's paw ties it to the violence of imperialism that ties ideas of curses, danger, and distrust to colonized peoples.

The Judge's House:

• The rats as former guests of the judge's house.

• The way Jack infantilizes himself ("Here comes, Johnny!", use of nursery rhymes, chasing Danny -- mirroring Wendy and Danny playing the beginning of the film) during the last 40 minutes shows that violence is a form of "play" to him.

• The hotel is a representation of where "work" (familial + contractual obligation) and "play" (violence, hedonism/indulgence -- eg. guy in bear suit giving the hotel owner a blowjob) meet. This gives the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." context. ("dull" referring to Jack's difficulty with writing.)

The Judge's House:

• Description of Judge killing Malcomson ("...the Judge seeming never discouraged nor discomposed at failure, but playing as a cat does with a mouse." pg 156)

• Rose's life is consumed by Coagula system of violence as her role as bait requires her to spend months at a time initiating romantic and sexual relationships with victims. She has no genuine personal relationships, as her family routinely uses her and her body. She was essentially groomed to take this role, given her appearance in the video Chris was forced to watch.

The Shining:

• Jack is isolated by the expectations of American fatherhood that require him to work, regardless of his passions, and provide for his family. Wendy and Danny are introduced together and often wear coordinating outfits when they're in the same frame, solidifying their bond and contrasting it with Jack role in the family. He is given no space in his life to exist for himself or "play," influencing his ability to write, causing him to violently lash out.

• The Overlook is tied to isolation through its secluded location and the nature of the caretaker's job. Jack initially acknowledges and embraces that isolation. However, in his final moments in the maze, he cries for help. He is lost in a maze (represented by the hotel and literal hedge maze) whose walls are created by his obligations toward his family and employers and the society that expects him to take on these duties happily.

The Others:

• Grace is physically and emotionally isolated from others. Her manor is an island in a sea of fog. The medical condition of her children forces her to live in constant fear of endangering them. Her life is about her children: it dictates the way she moves through her house, who she sees, and her own mental health. Beyond being a single mother, her responsibilities include being a teacher and staff keeper: every relationship she has centers an unbalanced power dynamic. Especially after her husband, an equal, dies, this isolation pushes her to kill her children, a large source of her isolation, smothering them the way she has been smothered.
