Many African Americas came to the Northwest territory for the land, opportunities, and new rights. Compared to where they came from and where other African Americans still lived, the amount of success in the new land was very large. When African Americans were able to become successful wealthy farmers, they used this new position to push equality and liberty within the nation. In Indiana many African Americans lived in the rural outskirts in order to stay out of the city where rules are strongly enforced. In this passage, the African Americans did not lose their right to vote or own property but rather gain them. The white population in Indiana at the time lived simultaneously with the African Americans which therefore did not take away their voting or property.

The Constitution of 1851 shows us how the rights to vote and own property were not only taken away but pushed to be clearly shown. The white population wanted to show how they were still better than the colored population and the writing of the lack of rights the colored people had showed who had the power. The white population became uneasy when the colored population was able to become successful and push for equality. Therefore, the white population wrote that the colored did not have the same rights as the whites.

In the Indiana Constitution of 1851 the rights of the colored population are addressed. In Article 2 it mentions that white males were allowed to vote but it also mentions that colored people do not have the right to vote. In Article 13 it says that colored people are not allowed to move into Indiana and that any colored person in Indiana can no longer do business with other people, which would ultimately drive them away. The Constitution of 1851 of Indiana directly identifies the rights that white people had and the ones colored people lacked which is a very large difference from the Constitution of 1816. The shift within the Constitution may have been from the rising power of the African Americans in Indiana and the white population wanted to make it clear that they were still superior.

This document shows us the successes and the opportunities that came along the early black settlements in the northwest. Colored people were able to raise their families, become successful, be a part of a community, and even some received an education. The successes of these early colored people is outlined to show what life was like when they have the rights to property and voting. It also gives insight into how the colored population exceeded the boundaries enough that the white population became uneasy and took the oppertunities away.

While Lincoln agreed that the colored people are inferior, he thought that they should get the rights as they were also people and a part of the Nation. With the law of no freedom, even in free states, there was no where for a slave to go that would get them freedom. The fugitive slave act was put into place to make sure that slaves were kept and that they couldn’t gain their own freedom.

The fugitive slave act of 1850 required slaves to be returned to their owners, even in they were in a free state. The article itself lists out some of the duties that came within this law. It was decided that the Superior Court of each state and territory within the United States had the power to appoint commissioners to do this work. The article also said that any person helping or keeping a slave from being returned may be required to pay a fee and serve jail time. The marshals and deputies were required to obey and execute all warrants. The fugitive salve act outlined many of the rules that came along with it and the consequences of action of colored people and those helping them.

The conclusions that can be drawn from these documents is that there was more than one factor that took away some people’s rights. Overall the African American population was the one that struggled with their right to vote and own property. All the while the white population was the one that was making these rules. The white population viewed the colored population as inferior which was one of the main reasons why the colored population was refused these rights. After viewing the successes and outcomes of the possibilities that colored people had, the white population also became uneasy. This uneasiness was another reason why the rights were taken away because the white population wanted to stay superior to the colored population which meant the need for a limit on their success.

Dred Scott could’ve been ruled as free especially because his owner was the one that took him into Missouri. However the court ruled him as not being a citizen because the color of his skin.

Douglas and other white people thought that the colored population was inferior to them in many ways. Using that idea, the whites are able to rationalize that since they are superior than the colored people do not deserve the same things that they have. Douglas must go through the rights that the colored people do not have in order to defend them and make sure the white population stay superior. The belief of being better than the colored population as well as the desire to limit their power were some of the driving forces in taking away the colored people's right to vote and property.

Douglas comes into the debate with the overall idea that colored people should not have the same rights as white people. Douglas believed that the colored population was ultimately inferior to the white population which is why they should not have the same rights as white people. Douglas claimed that along with colored people and Indians there were other groups that were inferior to the whites. Douglas defended the already given laws such as colored people not having a right to vote or live in Indiana. Douglas said that colored people shouldn't vote because the government was created for white people to be a part of and he thought that if colored people were involved in the government in any way they would mess it up. Douglas claimed that the colored people should not be able to live in Indiana because the whites had created a beautiful land and Douglas didn't want the colored to mess it up.
