  • little hill (The Mount of Joy) - a hill in Italy, symbolizes the completion of a journey, a sanctuary of Christianity

  • Easter Season - rebirth, chose this time because it's a time to defeat Hell

  • equinoctial rebirth - period of struggle between darkness and light, heightened spiritual warfare

  • Three Beasts of Worldliness - leopard (malice and fraud), lion (violence and pride), she-wolf (uncontrollable/lust), lead him away from heaven

  • Despairing into the darkness of error - failing as a person to be good, sins

  • She-Wolf - Rome and greed

  • Virgil, Dante's symbol of human reason - also shows the lasting impact of being a historic figure, which is what Dante aspired to be. Shows the limitations too

  • Final ascent - draws a similarity between himself and Jesus (to heaven)
