Thoreau is saying that all the things around him in nature keep him company. Nature facilitates his serenity. He also says that Earth is just a point in space, alone in the universe, therefore, even when we’re in the company of people, we can still be feel lonely. Separation from man doesn’t make you feel lonely. For instance, you could be in a room full of people and still feel lonely. People have the wrong idea of what loneliness is. Loneliness is a feeling, not a physical condition. A person can be with someone in the same room, but not be there mentally or emotionally.
"I have found that no exertion of the legs can bring two minds much nearer to one another."

Thoreau is reflecting the transcendentalist idea that people and things are a reflection of God and the divine soul. He says that “Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” Thoreau means that man can find God or things related, like heaven, in nature. He uses intuition to see God in the frozen pond, which is also another transcendentalist idea.

Thoreau is trying to convey the peacefulness of nature, as well as the aspects of life's ups and downs. The warmer suns represent the happiness in life, while the rain represents the sadness in life. Also, the fog represents confusion in life. Similarly to society, things in nature are constantly changing. For instance, the change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather is an example of this. The dark and sluggish hours don’t last forever because they change to bright and elastic ones. The sadness in life changes to happiness, almost like the changing of dark to bright hours in nature.
"The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather, from dark and sluggish hours to bright and elastic ones, is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim."

Transcendentalism was a philosophical movement that developed in the late 1820s and 1830s in the eastern region of the United States. Transcendentalists can be described as a generation of people struggling to define spirituality and religion in a way that took into account the new understandings their age made available. Thoreau had many transcendentalist ideas in his writings. Some of these ideas included; every natural fact is a symbol of some spiritual fact, people looked through nature to feel the presence of a divine soul, and intuition allowed God into your soul which was revealed in nature. People went into nature to find a connection with God and the divine soul.

Nowadays, people find their connection to God by going on spiritual retreats. In the religious and spiritual sense, when a person says that they are going on a retreat, it means they are withdrawing from society to a quiet place for prayer, study, to reflect, or to meditate. It is a time of solitude and silence to engage in adoration or religious exercises. A retreat can be a few days and is often held in a religious house. Retreats serve the purpose of spiritual growth and improving one's closeness with God.

Solitude was written during the time of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a period of time when factories and cities increased in speed, efficiency, and population. Automobiles were invented, along with all other sorts of machinery, which made city life noisier and more stressful. Thoreau felt that people needed an escape from all of the hustle and bustle of the city. However, he thought that you did not have to be completely alone to find an escape. Escape can be found in nature or the quiet natural world around you. An escape into the woods allows you to clear your mind from the toxins of humanity and learn what it's like to be kept company by the untainted world around you.

People still need an escape from people and the loud world that surrounds them. It is even worse than the past because of the updated and increased amount of technology used for communication. Social media and cell phones prohibit an escape from the people in your life, unless you physically turn off your phone and move away. For some people, a trip to the woods without human contact or a cell phone could be a way to learn how to live a less cluttered and stressful life.
