According to Cain (2012), introverts are at their most capable in a quiet, low-key environment. I would feel the need for this type of environment to work at my best in my classroom. I believe that introverts would feel welcomed in my classroom, because for the most part, students are working alone in my classroom. My program uses online learning with Edgenuity. So, the majority of the time students are working by themselves or with me. My class is structured to be mostly quiet, and I believe I do give my students adequate “think time” by humming the jeopardy theme song in my head. Educators have to teach students to work both together and alone (Cain, 2012). So, I would need to implement some kind of team building exercise into my classroom.

Cain, S. (2012).

Chad needs time to develop answers. So, Mr. Jackson should implement activities, such as journals, to give students time to develop their own answers in writing on their feelings about a book. Mr. Jackson’s treatment of Chad’s answer is inappropriate and only leads to resentment from Chad. Teachers should avoid shouting at their students at all costs, because that is when they have lost an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Additionally, teachers need to keep their emotions in check for the sake of their students and be mindful of the things that they say. Furthermore, criticizing a student for being slower than other students does not help, because it furthers student resentment. Mr. Jackson doesn’t seem to have empathy when it comes to students that behave differently in class. So, he should get to know and understand his students to develop this empathy. Fonseca (2014) states that an introvert’s behavior when engaging with learning material may be construed with not understanding the material. Chad may very well have an understanding of the material from a different perspective that Mr. Jackson is interpreting as not understanding.

Fonseca, C. (2014).

I can apply everything that I have learned. I am an introvert myself. So, I have empathy, and understand for other introverts. I can respect their privacy and do everything that I can to support them respectfully. Furthermore, this understanding of introverts can be applied for differentiation in my classroom. Introverts prefer to work by themselves, and I want to empathize with that along with developing their team work skills. Nevertheless, it is generally a good idea to give introverts time by themselves to recuperate their energy to be around others.
