Larry Sultan takes his 'home' photographs and focus' on his parents, whereas Corinne Day uses her friends and younger people. Day's photographs are taken from a longer timeline, showing the progression of her friend and what she looks like as she grows into her adulthood. Sultan captures his parents in their pension age, where they seem to live quite luxuriously. For example, his mother about to go in the swimming pool with his father shows they live peacefully. Day captures her pictures more youthfully, showing the struggles and rawness of being young, without much money, doing whatever they can to have fun. A common theme both sets of images have though is the hues of green and nature. Sultans images both captured indoors and outdoors include a lot of green colours, symbolizing peacefulness and nature. It adds to the aura of the photographs showing this older couple to still take pride in their youthful style. Days images show her models to be caught quite off guard, where as Sultan's are a bit more posed, but not too much so it looks obvious. Day's images capture more emotion, in one of the pictures the woman looks like she's been hysterically crying. On travel with Danish Muslim Aid, a help organization based in Copenhagen. Danish Muslims has collected finance to build a well in the Somali-district in Ethiopia. The Somali-district shares borders with Somalia. 99% of the population is Ethnic Somalis. They suffer hard because of the drought. 98 % of the populations are Muslim.

The conditions in the Somali-Region are alarming. Drought four years in a row makes it almost impossible for their Nomadic existence. The ongoing fight between the separatist organization Ogaden National Liberation Front [ONLF] and the Ethiopian government hit almost every civilian in the region. In 2008 Human Rights Watch published a document that
claimed crimes committed against Humanity on the civilian population. It also claimed that ONLF committed similar crimes.

Ngo’s and journalists are banned from working in the region.


Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia. It's a big city of contrasts. Religion and poverty is present everywhere. I stayed there for fourteen days, walking in the streets….


Lalibela

The town Lalibela is well known for its rock-hewn churches. Religion and poverty is present everywhere believers are praying be the churches.

Home for these people is a complete different world to my home. Freddy Hagan, the photographer, has captured these people at their most natural, rawest habitat. The whole culture and scenery is different to where I live, the vibrancy of all the materials, clothes, paint on  the walls. The hues and greenery of some of the places outdoors is beautiful, and I find all the colours gorgeous.  In some of the images that show the suffering these people face are brutally true, and a real shock to observe. In the image of the homeless person laying on the floor, only a simple blanket covers him, he looks lifeless, dead even. The photograph of the little boy with fly's infested in the crevice of his mouth and nose, and even in the corners of his eyes. It's awful. It's one thing to see images like this all through my life, but to really sit and look at them closely, really SEEING the photographs for what they are, noticing the smallest details is to really understand that this is real, and it is happening. That in itself, is daunting enough. Home for these people is being united around each other, but the photographer also catches most people in their own little world. I really admire this technique Hagan uses, even if it means some of the images are out of focus, he captures people in their own little moment.  The subjects of the images never really invite you in, so I do feel like the observer of the images, except for the one of the boys in the school where they are looking into the camera. The personalities of the subjects are really enhanced in these images, some people looking happy, and some looking extremely unhappy. Hagan seems to be sort of an invisible photographer, he goes by quite unnoticed, capturing people in the reality of their motions. These photographs show the truth of these peoples situations, the one of the man on the floor with an amputated leg next to his prosthetic leg, surrounded by cluttered litter, it's the truth. I thought it was quite an interesting comparison. In this image I edited the Levels, making the original white walls more crisp and bright, and then using Colour Balance to add the purple-blue just to make the image more colourful. If I were to improve this image, I would choose a different destination with a different sign giving a completely different message, hopefully similar to the one Hagan captured in Ethiopia. This meant I got the same angle Hagan did when he captured the image of the people of Ethiopa in their time of prayer. In my image it's an empty seating area of the college. If I were to improve this image, I should pick the timing a bit better, for example I could re-take the image at lunchtime when the seating area is busy and full of people, then it would look more like Hagan's photograph and show more of a community 'unison' atmosphere. I enhanced the saturation on this image and made it more sharp since it was quite blurred. It's also going to be personal to me as it will include my friends and the people we now hang around with. The story is about the people in the photographs rather than the location itself. The story is going to be about my friends who are female, and how the people and men we have met in our lives have changed it for the worst. We met these boys and our lives changed. Their relationships with eachother as a big group are really intense and there's a lot of anger and hurt and resentment in the group. At one point they were all in happy relationships, then one after the other they deteriorated. There's been a lot of fights, dark times for all of them. They each have their own battles and they come together and simply party at my friends house. It's getting a bit too much for my friend Hannah and I think if you look closely in the images there is a lot of raw emotion in everyones faces. The location I chose was a small town called Birtley where I live. I chose this location because I grew up here and it's somewhere where I know very well. Birtley is a home to a lot of people, especially my family & some of my friends. This location means a lot to me as I have so many memories here and I know I won't be living here forever. I wanted to portray the images both negatively and positively as I believe Birtley is a place where there is a good balance of each. I have had some of the best times of my life, and some of the worst.
