Please add your thoughts about the struggles we have been facing with our middle school students and our overall school culture. We will use this list (and add to it as necessary) when we come together for our summit meeting on June 6 to generate possible solutions to implement next year.

There is no accountability for work. I have had several students turn in work from the first quarter this week.
You ask them to work on their classwork and they spend more time socializing than they do working on the work. Then, when they are told the work is due at the beginning of class the following day, they just do not turn anything in. Same thing the next day and the same pattern happens again and again.
Even projects where they lose points for late work is handed in nonchalantly whenever they get around to it and not when it is due.

The dress code is being violated daily and by repeat offenders. The girls seem to look at it as a challenge as to what they can get away with. They all have a "backup" pair of leggings (which aren't dress code, either) in their bags to throw on if they are busted for their bootie shorts.
Repeat offender boys tend to wear their non-uniform sweatshirts daily. And laugh it off if they get an infraction.

The missing work is a huge issue. Our students think that deadlines are suggestions. Because of all the last minute work being turned in, I feel like l am being punished at the end of each nine weeks.

The lack of respect is alarming. Infractions are nothing to students. There is so much eye rolling and lip smacking when students are asked to follow the rules.

Dress code: 1) Check dress code at the start of the day. Have them line up and not enter class until we check if it's needed.
2) Write the infraction, and take any dress item that is non dress code. Students may not get them until the end of the day. That will cut down on many offenses because they won't have it.
3) The ability to send a student up front if it is not possible to be fixed in class. No, it's not life-threatening, but it's disrespectful and intentional, which is basically defiance. If it's really worth their while not to do it, it will decrease drastically. It's also what the uniform policy states will happen.
4) Stress to parents from Day -10 next year that this is important and that we will expect and require their help and support. We can't let it slide, because that's what we've got now.

Paper planners:
I really believe that paper planners would be beneficial for the students. They are easier to write in and spot check for homework, they have spaces for communication between parents and teachers, and can also include useful sheets for each subject (formulas, Spanish vocab/terms, etc.). Parents don't check PowerSchool/Canvas, and that's mostly a choice of being tired/not wanting to look at a screen, I think. The planner would be extra work but well worth it.

Late work:
Clearly this is a huge problem.
1) Allow late work, but it must be turned in by 3:15 the next day. This allows the student to use 7th period on the day it is due (encourage them to call and stay that day) and/or work at home that night. It gives time if they really want to turn in the work, but it makes sure it's completed during the current unit, doesn't drag things out, and is clear and simple for parents, students, and teachers.
2) Work turned in late (at the point you collect it) receives a 15% penalty. Work not turned in by the day after becomes a 0. If we want them to learn to be responsible, we've got to show them what it looks like and require it. They still get a second chance for oopsies.
