Darry's role is basically the constantly sacrificing father. I call him sacrificing because he sacrificed a lot for Ponyboy to have a good education. Darry is hard on Ponyboy because he thinks that Ponyboy can see the way he sees and always wants him to be a better version to carry a legacy for the family. Some evidence is when Sodapop runs out suddenly after the two, Pony and Darry argued because Soda doesn't want them to keep fighting and getting no where.
