- Fluency is crucial in reading because when it comes to state tests, students need to be able to read texts quickly without getting stuck on decoding words so they can answer questions about the meaning of the text.
- To help students overcome their hardships, teachers may use the FDL. During an FDL lesson, the teacher displays a text to their students, reads it 2-3 times while the students follow along silently, and then the students discuss the text and read it 2-3 times themselves. Word study activities can be administered after this.

It is important that reading fluency assessments are not only measuring reading rate and WCPM but also prosody because that is an important indicator of fluency.
Poor readers don't have this automaticity of decoding words and comprehending the meaning behind what is being read therefore their fluency suffers.
