Discourse and Writing Reflection by Vivian Robert

Think about your teaching of Reveal Math (or Primary Math) last year. (1) Where did you build opportunities for discourse and writing? (2) What tools, skills, or teaching strategies did you use to elicit dialogue and develop math writing skills? (3) How did the discourse and/or writing opportunities change how your students engaged with the math, as well as, deepen their understanding of ideas?

One area where I have built in opportunities for discourse and writing is during the number routines. Kids respond in their math notebook and then partnerships discuss their thought process before we share out with the group. Unit 1 helps to set the stage in terms of math conversations and being respectful. My students are eager to listen to each other as they share their problem-solving strategies and welcome different viewpoints and ideas.

I think there have been a lot of opportunities in Reveal Math to teach students to generate discourse, and changing it into writing to explain their mathematical thinking. The teaching of specific mathematical terms has increased their ability to write about math. Students with IEPs have also benefited from this aspect Reveal Math.

Students engage in writing and discussion around math during the mini-lesson and share time. Some strategies I incorporate are the use of signal words, first, next, then, etc. In addition, I remind the students to be specific and use mathematical vocabulary. Student discussion and writing conveys their depth of understanding within a given skill/concept.
