Kids respond in their math notebook and then partnerships discuss their thought process before we share out with the group. Unit 1 helps to set the stage in terms of math conversations and being respectful. My students are eager to listen to each other as they share their problem-solving strategies and welcome different viewpoints and ideas.

The teaching of specific mathematical terms has increased their ability to write about math. Some strategies I incorporate are the use of signal words, first, next, then, etc. In addition, I remind the students to be specific and use mathematical vocabulary. Student discussion and writing conveys their depth of understanding within a given skill/concept.
