This quotation reflects Estella's falsely conceived sense of pride. Estella shows her superiority by acting like an adult ('one-and-twenty') and even a royalty ('a queen'). Ironically, she is only a 'queen' of the derelict Satis house. Given that she is technically an orphan and the same age as Pip, Dickens is perhaps suggesting how laughable the emphasis on the class system was.

Explaination: This quote is key in Chapter 8 as it illustrates Pip's true feelings and what Estella thinks of him. Estella shows in this quote that she wants to see Pip hurt and emotional as it is what Miss Havisham has 'trained' her to do. It also shows that Estella is powerful as she is talking down to him and thinks he is a 'coarse monster'. It also shows Pip's emotions that he feels hurt by Estella but is still in love with her

This quote by Estella highlights the power and social stauts she has over Pip, by using the word 'boy'.  In addtion the way Estella says 'dont be ridiculous'  emphasis the fact she think Pip is a young and imature boy, her quick sharp tone also tells the reader that she is cold and feels no reason to be nice to Pip. Furthermore the end of the quote intrigues the read as there must be a reason Estella is so reluctant to enter the room or maybe she has been tolded by Miss Havisham to not come in, which inedcates Miss Havisham's cunning ways and future plans for Pip.  

The quote (about Estella) highlights her distaste and hatred for Pip by showing us that she doesn't want to have to hold any cards that Pip has touched for any longer than she has to, that his 'coarse' hands are horrible, and to be avoided. It also shows that Estella will use any means to 'break his heart', as she could have celebrated her victory but instead using it to make herself happier, she uses it to hurt him even further.

This quote also shows the separation in the class system, by demonstrating, that even in a game of luck, Estella knew she would win, and that is was not a victory. She shows this by not celebrating the fact that she won, that it was not an achievement, it was 'easy' and came as no surprise to her. The use of 'had' also could suggest that is was inevitable. This shows that a victory over a lower class cistern is worthless, and thus that they are considers worthless.

This show that Pip realises he is alot less wealthier than Estella is and Pip is ashamed of being poor.

This remark aimed at Pip was said to cause worry, discomfort and shame. By saying this, Estella is "leavering" herself up the  hierarchy by pointing out his flaws and differences. This tells you that she wants him to feel inferior to her. This could be for many reasons such as her childhood upbringing and how different it was to Pip's; all her life she has lived within a large house and had everything she has wanted, while Pip has lived in a place far away from Estella's luxuries, with his strict sister as his Guardian and free time as a rarity. This could cause her image of herself worth to be inflated and influence her attitude.

Another reason why Estella is mocking Pip is becuase she may feel intimitaded by him; he is something new, that she hasn't come across before and therefore feels defensive (although other boys like Pip may have come to the house, she in her mind, may have stereotyped boys like Pip to be a threat to her ego).

We are hinted to the idea later in the book, that this remark was purely to remind him of his believed place, and to be ingraved into Pip's head. By pointing out not just his "coarse hands" but also his "thick boots" suggesting that there are many things "wrong" and different about him. This would make pip feel that he was not good enough for her ( as we know that he thinkis she is pretty).

Explanation: The fact that Pip would rather not say anything shows his uncertainty and fear towards those of a higher class. He may have these emotions as he believes that the higher class have power over him, so he in effect has no right to say anything. The fact he stammers shows again his uncertainty and his discomfort in the social situation as he is struggling to come up with words. Miss Havisham uses the imperative "tell me", this shows that she has power over Pip as he cannot make his own decisions as he is being forced to convey thoughts to her. Finally the use of "bending down" shows the unbalance in class between Pip and Estella/Miss Havisham. It does this by showing Pip as very small compared to Miss Havisham thus suggesting him to be weak and no where near the giant and grandness nature of the upper class MIss Havisham.

This quote by Estella is all about social class. Estella uses the word ‘boy’ which shows her power over Pip. She feels a sense of superiority over him and knows her place in the high society at a very young age. It also shows that she is shocked by the thought of playing cards with a common boy like Pip because she knows he’s lower than her. This means she judges people on their social class. Pip is insulted by this but accepts it because he believes Estella’s right.

This quote by Pip shows the way that Estella treats Pip and the way in which she veiws him, this is portrayed by Estellas actions towards Pip in this particular part of chapter 8. When Estella gets the food for Pip she does not directly give the food to Pip, she puts the mug down ont he floor and gives him the food without looking at him. This shows that Estella finds simularitys between ip and some kind of animal that eats off the floor.

Pip then goes onto say that Estella looked at him as if he were a dog in disgrace. This shows that Estella doesnt just veiw Pip as a dog but as a dog in disgrace, which is worse as a dog in disgrace is maybe un wanted and un loved, where as a normal dog would be.

This quote is significant because it forshadows the future for Estella and Pip, as Estella will continue to tease and insult with whatr she says and what she does, as if Estella has begun as she means to go on.

"If Miss Havisham wished to see me," returned Mr. Pumblechook, discomfited. 

"Ah!" said the girl; "but you see she don't." 

This quote shows how much confidence Estella has. A typical girl of her age wouldn't normally speak down to a man like Mr. Pumblechook. She's obviously very proud and has the cheek to speak back to him in this mannor. It is as if she's picked up on her mothers social class and used it to be dismissive of others that are slightly lower ranked than herself.

This quote shows that Pip is considering something that has never crossed his mind before, just because Estella has sowed seeds of doubt in his mind. Everyone Pip has come across had been of a working background so had 'coarse hands', making his perfectly normal. Pip is familiar with people having more serious things to consider than their appearance. However, Estella made fun of trivial aspects of his appearance as she had never met anyone who had come across in the same way as Pip, due to her higher status. The quote shows that Estella's words have a lasting impact on Pip, as he is bothered by what she says and it begins to dwell on his mind, causing him some hurt, showing he does care about what she thinks of him, and sees her as more important to him than he may let on.
