What did you find as your results (meaning, were you and your partner accurate in identifying people based on physical features? Explain. Why is it that physical characteristics cut through “racial lines”? Is there any redeeming value to organizing people’s race according to racial characteristics? Why or why not?

My partner and I were really bad at sorting people by appearance because looks can be very deceiving. We were very inaccurate at sorting the people based on physical appearance because many people identified with only one race even if they were multiracial, and honestly many of my picks were based on my perception of how "black", "white", "indian", etc people looked.

I agree with Reagan with this specification. Racial lines can be established through many economical aspects, as well as, many commutative prospects. The perception is all how you make it to be.

At what point did the term “white” appear to distinguish people, AND how has this distinction lead to systematic exclusion and unequal treatment of other racial/ethnic groups?

The definition of race has revolutionized over a great span of time. The definition has changed primarily due to many stereotypes and genetic basis. Before, ancient people determined their differences because of culture and language, not by physical attributes. The term “white” appeared in 1680, which determined the statement of superiority. The whites, being very superior, felt that they were able to control all other ethnicities, which led to unequal treatment, racial segregation, etc.

Why isn’t race biological? Explain how physical appearance, geographic origin, and genetic similarity blur our identification of a peoples’ “race”. How does this support our use of “ethnicity” instead? So, are people, who have been organized into racial groups, more alike or more dissimilar? Explain.

I did not do that well, primarily because I laced some knowledge on cultural diversity. I missed many questions that involve chronological answers and geographic answers (countries). Race is not biologically because it is not genetic. The genetic makeup cannot correlate to this directly. The way people are seen is differently gone by physical appearance (skin), geographic origin (the south), and the genetic similarity (same chromosomal, DNA, etc.). People are somewhat alike, however, they are not due to the fact that genetics is not dependent on race and the way race is organized.

~ 6 Facts ~

1. Social Security was created in 1935 that gave safety to million of people that gave them retirement. These provisions were what excluded certain people like agricultural workers and domestic servants, but now they are secure with protection and benefits.

2. In 1935, the Wagner Act was established and was used to unionize. This originally prohibited racial discrimination, but later the American Federation fought to create the final version where nonwhites were permitted. They were not only locked out of high-end jobs, they were denied protection like medical care and employment. These specified laws changed overtime in the late 50's white unions remained all white.

3. The tale of a family explains the hard lives that they had to face. In 1951, they bought a house that was two-stories and they paid it through their allowing of African Americans renting and selling. Here you can see the struggles of paying a relatively small house with a small price. Another boy explained his story as growing up rich. He was able to have a large house that was in a suburban outlook. They were able to have a nice life. Through these tow stories we can see that race plays a key role as far as societal issues that develop.

4. In relation to fact three, the black family was able to sell their home for $29,000, while the white family was able t sell their home for $299,000. We can see a massive difference between prices which indicates racial struggle and the hardships of selling a house based on color of skin.

5. Where does race live? It began with the White Flight which showed a distribution pattern of nonwhite residents moving to neighborhoods. The white people were racially flawed to not go to those neighborhoods which cause racial segregation within neighborhoods. This also related to the idea of socioeconomic equals.

6. In Conclusion to the Where does race live? slide, it explains that way people are distributed to get the best schools and the best amenities to prosper the things around them. Race plays a key role, but its is not the one people of all races normally think about. The most important factor is the health of the community as a whole and the preservation of a resource, property values, and opportunities as a whole.

In 1998, 2/3 of those selected for body searches at customs checkpoints were black or Latino, however 97% of body searches reveal no contraband.

2. 21% of drivers in Maryland are minority groups 80% of drivers pulled over and searched on Interstate 95 in Maryland are minority races, persons found possessing drugs are evenly split between whites and minorities.

3. In 1995, the average white family had over 8 times the wealth of the average nonwhite family. At the same income levels, whites had twice as much wealth as nonwhites.

4. 50-80% of one's lifetime wealth depends on opportunities presented by past generations ie.) education, job connections, informal loans, etc.

5. Many whites argue that race is no longer an issue in America, because they are blind to racial hardships because as a white person they are never presented with those issues.

6. Assets really divide America more than income. People are still quite unequal, even when they have similar achievements in life. Meaning a white man might make more money than a black man, even if they have the same education level, only because he is white.

How To Be An American was one of the most interesting slideshow because it shows the difference in views among Americans regarding race and racial privileges in America. I think that people tend to treat people differently based on perceived racial groups because they have fallen to racial stereotypes and often times their actions may even be subconscious. I think that the way race has been handled in America over the years has a huge impact on people's mindsets because certain beliefs and values have been instilled in families over many generations. People tend to be most comfortable with people who look like them, and naturally have a fear of the unknown which is a source of the fear that they have. Racial discrimination in the US affects people socially because they are often treated differently based on the color of their skin. White people usually are handed more opportunities than say blacks solely because they are white. Economically, white people often times are given jobs over blacks or Indian people who are equally or even more qualified than they are just because they are white. In the United States, I think racial discrimination is most common in the Southeast because of the racial history in this region and that certain beliefs have remained in generations of families that reside in the Southeast.

Describe what you and your partner feel to be the worst political judgement enacted by our government in perpetuating racial inequality. When was this enacted? How specifically did the law hurt minority racial groups in the USA? Can you find a current example in our current political dialogue (i.e. voting rights act repeals; Bush Era tax credits; equal opportunity laws) that is either strengthening or weakening the gaps between whites and non-whites? Explain. Describe the “Downward Spiral” for non-white families. What are the most important factors for families to stay healthy and happy in their communities? What role does race play in the distribution of these factors? Explain.

The Wagner Act of 1935; This originally prohibited racial discrimination, but later the American Federation fought to create the final version where nonwhites were permitted. Education is a current topic right now. Many people automatically categorize nonwhite people under the CP or regular classes, while whites are in AP or Honors classes based on their race. The Downwards Spiral is a series of events that happen overtime. It explains that in the beginning, the White flight begins where many nonwhite people move into a neighborhood and then all of the white in that neighborhood move out and categorize the place as a place to not go to. Next, the property value goes down. When the residents leave, the demand of the housing prices fall. The nonwhite people do not get a large enough market for demand, where whites represent 80%. Thirdly, the taxes goes up. When nonwhite people are in their community, they have to pay more money in taxes than the white people have to. Why? the increasing taxes leads to population loss which affect the money compensated; that is why they target the lower-middle class residents. Next, the Services Suffer where the communities get poorer and the people are not able to maintain the level of services. This means higher crime rates and larger increase of cost. Eventually they fall off and the predatory business begins to disappear. Lastly, the community hit a huge road bump and they risk many aspects of depopulation and further intensify the society itself. What I am trying to get out of this, however, is that the health of a community is stimulant on the growth of a community and not the race of its resident, however, race can play a role in the distribution of certain resources.
