What Stands Out: Chronic Absenteeism

One out of every 4 students is chronically absent in our district. The two highest subgroups are homeless youth (55.8%) and foster youth (37.1%). The lowest percentage of chronic absenteeism is found within the Filipino student group (6.8%)

I wonder if we aggressively address graduation requirements with 9th and 10th graders and parents, if it would make a difference in our graduation rate?

It would be better if we let students know that test scores and their performance is important. Some students hear from some educators that these tests are not important. (It would take the whole village to deliver this mesage.)

It would be better if, at the high schools, at the beginning of 2nd semester, we celebrate the students "on-track" to graduate.

And, the power of doing that with 9th, 10th, & 11th graders.

I wonder if we changed our messaging in the perspective of "celebrations," if the culture and climate of our schools would change?

1) Let's celebrate your attendance.

2) Let's celebrate your good grades.

3) Let's celebrate your scholar-athlete status.

4) Etc.
