Declaration of Breda (4 April 1660)

The declaration of Breda states the promises that Charles II made in exchange for his restoration to the throne. Previous to the Declaration he was in exile.

The Great Plague (1665)

Rats carried flees that had the disease, and in that way spread it even more. Because of poor hygiene, the rats were even worse in the city. London lost roughly 15% of its population.

The Great Fire (1666)

The great Fire started in a bakery. The baker claimed that he had extinguished the fire, but a few hours later his house was fully on fire. Because of a wind from the east, the fire spread quickly. The houses were made of wood, and because of the drought were dry wood. They were also built close to each other, which contributed to the fast spread.

Dutch raid on the Medway (1667)

Commander De Ruyter went on command of Johan de Witt on a raid on the Medway. In this raid, the dutch sunk the best ships of the English people. The raid was performed fairly easily because of poor defence of the harbour.

Parliamentary attempts to exclude James from the crown (1679-1681)

These years were years of political crises. Charles got through them by keeping his nerve and changing ministers, basically avoiding any more mistakes.

James ii (1685-1688)

James II was catholic, despite that he stil rose to the throne in 1685. He was Charles' brother. He ruled for three years and then was replaced by Willem of Nassau and his wife Mary.

Attack on the Dutch (1664)

The problem was that the parliament didn't believe Charles had financial problems because of his expensive lifestyle. They believed the money was being wasted. In revenge of this, Charles threw an unprovoked attack on the Dutch (1664). He hoped that his people would believe that the Dutch were the agressors.

Another attack on the Dutch (1672)

This attack was the beginning of the Third Anglo-Dutch war. The cause was secret trades and negotiations with American colonies.

Charles failed to work with Parliament (1685)

Because of his failing to work with the Parliaments, Charles did not call any of them. This caused the problem that England could not obtain war taxes and was caught up in European affairs. Everyone who defied the king was persecuted and purged from the government.

Bodies of Oliver Cromwell, Robert Blake, Brad Bradshaw and Henri Irving hanged and heads on spikes (30 January 1661)

The bodies of the men were beheaded and then hanged from Westminster hall on the 12th anniversary of Charles I death.

Dunkirk sold to France (October 1662)

Charles II was in desperate need for money. Since Dunkirk wasn't bringing up much money, he sold it to France.

Charles II is crowned (23 April 1661)

When Charles II was crowned, a new set of Crown Jewels was used because the previous had been melted down by the Commonwealth.
