New Zealand's and white South Africans have been going at it on the field since the 1920s. White people were the "superior" race in South Africa even though there were less of them than blacks. They controlled a lot of law and government and decided to create laws to give themselves advantages and establish a superiority between the races. A system of apartheid was made in 1948. The country's (SA) sports teams were barred from including black and coloured athletes.

Many Pakeha New Zealanders, mostly those who were opposed to racially picked sports teams, thought their country's race relations were untouchable until the 1960s. They assumed full equality between Maori and Pakeha was a well-established aspect of New Zealand culture. There was still discrimination against Maori. US psychologist, David Ausubel, visited New Zealand and was shocked by the amount of racial discrimination be witnessed. Until the early 1960s, Maori were forbidden from hotel bars and barber shops, and were confined to the back stalls of the movie theatre. Maori players were even excluded from the team before going to South Africa in 1928.

To confront the impacts of colonialism, new anti-racism organisations had risen in the early 1970s. Nga Tamatoa, a group of young Maori, campaigned on problems such as land loss, language loss, and Treaty of Waitangi violations. Te Matakite o Aotearoa attled against Maori land loss and planned the massive 1975 Maori land march, which brought Maori political issues to national attention.
