Henry Morton Stanley is responsible for the deaths of around 10 million Congolese people because he was the one who had laid down the foundation for what was going to come. He also abused those who worked for him and sometimes the abuse led to death. When he first arrived at the Congo he hurt the people and if they refused his treatment he would issue a torturous punishment. He covered up all his wrong doing by pretending to run organizations and depicting a good person for the media. His lust for fame and acknowledgment made him execute anything that stood in his way, which meant harming others in any way possible.

This evidence shows that even before Stanley was ordered to do anything besides explore and negotiate he was hurting the Congolese people. This abuse could have led to the severe conditions that caused the tribesman to die, adding to the number of deaths. He did this because he saw the tribesman inferior and thought they did not deserve respect.

This evidence tells us that Stanley watched the European armies take over the Congo and kill the Congolese without stopping them at all. He never consider stopping the armies because he did not care about all the lives he was taking from the population. Not only did he witness killings but he witnessed the abuse leading up to the future murders. He made sure that their actions were undiscovered by perceiving himself and his crew as humanitarians who cared deeply about the Congolese people. He showed himself working alongside the people of the Congo to make sure no one suspected his actions and intentions.
