Ancestral and social: Ancestral because my mother immigrated here, and my father's family is Jewish.  Social because I identify with environmental ethics, eastern philosophical thinking, and counter-cultural artists.  

I don't identify with the culture I grew up in since we differed socio-economically from everyone around us. In the past few months, I've been thinking about how much gender is constructed by whiteness, and how being socialized by white people heavily impacted my perception of my gender identity. As I've started to evaluate and work through my identity, I've noticed how I've begun to realize that I also don't feel like I fit into the gender binary. One of the hallmarks of this condition is that the construction of self is often inconsistent and intangible. To get through that, I use facts. I was born in Florida. I grew up in Wisconsin. I am a bi-racial, bi-sexual, multi-talented individual. I think this is social...but it could be a little bit of everything. I identify as a French-Moroccan Jew. My Dad is Ashkenazi (Eastern European Jew) and my mom (French-Arabic immigrant).  I look ethnically ambiguous and people wonder what my ethnicity is but cant put their finger on it. When I say  "French Moroccan Jew" people have an aha moment, but I wouldn't say that is my primary identity; it's more of response that I give to people that ask. I probably resonate the most with being Jewish since I resonate with the story of being a Jewish American since that's how I was brought up.
